Friends, Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin is now an official Grandmother. Yesterday, her 18 year old daughter gave birth to a 7 pound, four ounce baby boy. He was named Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston, and born in Palmer, Alaska. The father is 18 year old Levi Johnston, who is an apprentice electrician and former Wasilla High School hockey player. He and Bristol have been dating for 3 years.
While one Grandmother is an Governor and former Vice Presidential nominee, the other is currently facing six felony counts of misconduct involving a controlled substance, rumored to be Oxycontin.
Hold on to your hats — but fellow school board members are accussing Assemblyman David Gantt’s hand picked school board member, and Democratic Party double dipper Cynthia Elliott (she works at Baden Street Settlement House), of playing politics with the education of poor African-American students.
What makes this even more shocking is that it was covered by the Democrat and Chronicle. From the D&C:
Six Rochester school board members voted Monday to pass about 30 resolutions that had been blocked by board member Cynthia Elliott.
Elliott was not present at the Monday meeting, which was called to reverse decisions made during a Dec. 18 meeting that included only four board members. Any no vote at that meeting caused a resolution to fail and Elliott rejected several resolutions because they came to the board months after the hirings or leaves of absences they
(snip)
Powell criticized Elliot for failing to show up at the meeting to listen to the discussion and accused her of political posturing.
“The one person who would benefit most from this knowledge decided not to be present,” she said.
Elliott did not respond to a request for comment.
Just a guess, but if Cynthia did honor the request for a comment — here’s what she might have said about why she blocked those resolutions, “That’s for me to know, and you to find out!”
Friends, I was in Washington, DC last week and got to talking with a fellow who deals with State Legislatures in the North. It was brought up that I was a New Yorker so the topic of our valiant state senate came up. This gentleman told me that he has seen some crazy things over his many years of dealing with dysfunctional state houses but our current Senate took the cake. He understood why it was imperative that Republicans keep control but mentioned that they will never have an opportunity as long as the current-Majority is led by the current faction. He stated that if we ever want to see real progress again, we need Republican leadership that can maintain Republican values yet still be able to work with Democrats.
Over the past couple days as I fumed about Caroline Kennedy, I began to ponder who would be able to effectively fill the role that this man thought would save our state. This morning, it dawned on me. The next Republican leader in the Senate should be…Joe Robach. And believe it or not, I’m not the first to think this. Commenter Saratoga Steve on Liz Benjamin’s blog, Daily Politics thinks Joe fits the mold too.
He is a Republican in a heavily Democratic district who withstood the shelling of a Liberal Elitist, with the backing of Don David Gantt in the year of Obama, 2008. He is beloved by the constituents in his district, loved by the conservatives in Greece, the Hispanic and African American communities in the city, and traditional Democratic supporters in Brighton. His district can be described as a microcosm of what this state is.
He was an elected Democrat in the Assembly for 10 years who, before an attempted coup, worked with Speaker Silver. He then went over to the Republicans in the Senate but has continued to work with Democrats in the Assembly and Senate for the betterment of his constituents. He has a good relationship with Governor Paterson (Paterson even called into his radio show in the midst of a dog fight of an election). Even while Senator Robach was a Democrat, he carried conservative values that defined his district and his party.
He can be a beacon to Assembly Republicans, who with their smallest minority ever, need a little bit of leadership from someone other than Jim Tedisco. He had a working relationship with then-Governor Pataki and resisted the bribes of Spitzer to be bought out for a Cabinet position. As Labor Committee Chairman, he knows how to get along with the Blue Collar men and women who do the heavy lifting, yet he also is close with college presidents like University of Rochester’s Joel Sigelman.
Most importantly, he’s one of us. He’s not a part time representative who balances representing his constituents with his law firm. He cares about the voices he speaks in Albany and does what he can to best serve them. New York needs someone like Joe Robach to lead the Republicans as we find our way out of the woods.
Dare attack the Eco-Movement high priests, and you may find yourself out in the cold.
Enter Dr. Will Happer: A Princeton University physicist and fellow of both the American Physical Society and the Nat’l Academy of Sciences, Dr. Happer had been Dir. of Energy Research (1990-1993) during the Clinton years until fired by Al Gore for “refusing to go along with Gore’s alarmism” about global warming. Dr. Happer asserts that “he had been told in 1993 that science was not going to intrude on policy.” He went on to point out that “fears about man-made global warming are unwarranted and are not based on good science. The earth’s climate is changing now, as it always has. There is no evidence that the changes differ in any qualitative way from those of the past.”
Continuing to scan a plethora of climate warming-related articles recently, it has become more than obvious that the man-made climate change myth is driven by ideological and political agendas, greed and power. Nothing more.
Blithely ballyhooed by the media, the man-made climate change mythology has been perpetrated by the effete liberal elites and their willing political cohorts in Washington. The short of it is that the “climate warming movement”, a religious and political movement in its own right, is probably every bit as menacing to the modern world as is Islamofascism, both being clear and present dangers to our liberty and our very way of life.
Dr. Happer joins a large number of respected scientists from around the world who are courageously countering the global warming hoax, and their ranks are growing exponentially. And while climate warming elites in America embark on what could be sweeping and costly programs to counter man-made global warming, Europe, a watershed of socialist drivel, is already backing off Kyoto and the economically debilitating cap-and-trade program as well. Will America learn from Europe’s mistakes? Right now, I’d say it’s a better than even chance it won’t. To paraphrase George Will, “The one surefire lesson of history is that we don’t ever seem to learn from it.”
No doubt, we’ve all heard that dissenting scientists around the world have been scorned, shunned, and their livelihoods often threatened for their apostasy. These folks are owed an immense debt of gratitude for bucking the opportunistic alarmists and for speaking up against global warming true-believers.
In addition to the 31,000 scientists from the Oregon Institute of Science & Medicine, about whom I wrote in a previous post, whose urgent petition to both the White House and Congress in May 2008 stated that “there is no convincing scientiific evidence that human release of CO2, methane and other greenhouse gases is causing, or will in the foreseeable future, cause, catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of Earth’s climate,” in 2007 and 2008 over 650 additional climatologists and other reputable scientists from around the world have similarly and openly debunked the myth. Among them, and some of their more revealing comments, these notables as well:
And these tidbits from scientific studies:
I thought Doug Giles of Townhall.com nicely summed it up this way: “The specious science of global warming establishes truth not by facts but through non-stop repetition.” Now, where have we seen that familiar strategy before? He goes on to say that “everything is being blamed on global warming from summer frost in Africa, snow storms in Las Vegas, freezing penguin chicks, poorly rising bread dough, forest fires in California, hurricanes, impoverished fashion houses and the recent economic downturn suffered by whorehouses in Beligium.” Amazing. More to the point, INSANE!
Could anything be plainer: on the matter of global warming, there is NO scientific consensus. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Thus, before our leadership commits our fast-dwindling fortunes to fighting windmills, shouldn’t the entire subject be openly, honestly and objectively debated by a transparent government commission of respected SCIENTISTS representing all points of view on the subject? Only then should we rationally contemplate draconian and intrusive spending programs to reduce our so-called “carbon footprint.” Is that really too much to ask? Unfortunately for us all, in these politically correct days of “governing by soundbites & repetition” I suspect a majority of us will blindly follow like sheep to their slaughter…
No people, I’m not speaking about former President Richard Nixon, nor am I speaking of new movie “Frost/Nixon.” I’m talking about Buffalo Bills Head Coach, Dick Jauron. While I know this is a blog about politics, I believe this issue needs to be pressed by all who share it so it hopefully resonates to Ralph Wilson’s hearing aid. He and Bills Chief Operating Officer Russ Brandon (Fisher Grad) need to fire Dick as soon as humanly possible. I have been a lifelong Bills fan, but I don’t know how much longer I can handle the depressing state of this franchise. Watching Sunday’s game just pushed me to the edge of being able to rationalize why I allow myself to be a Bills fan. Should have been fired at halftime for the series that ended the 1st half. Why in God’s name would you call a HB Dive on the 12 yard line with 22 seconds left and no timeouts left? I just can’t comprehend this strategy. In game where they can beat the Patriots for the first time in 11 tries and knock them out of the playoff race, you don’t take ONE shot towards the endzone when losing 3-0. He is aware that there is no way to stop the clock unless Fast Freddie Jackson takes it to the house. 22 seconds minus however long the run takes (say 5 seconds) is no enough time to get the field goal unit out there and line it up with hurricane force winds a-blowin’. I think that was much more boneheaded than the Losman call in the Meadowlands. At least most of us could understand, not agree, but understand what his intention was. That wasn’t the case this time around. I think a Monore County coach can do a better job (paging you Rich Lipani).
Let’s put this season into perspective. Start 5-1 (Yay, Lets Go Buff-a-lo), then proceed to go 2-8, with wins over the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Bronocos. 2-8? Are you freaking kidding me? The Jets just fired Eric Mangini because he went 1-4 over the last 5 games which would have equated over 5 more games to….2-8, Jauron and the Bills record over their last 10. Some coaches show some passion while on the sidelines, such as playoff-bound coaches Tony Sparano, Andy Reid, and Mike Tomlin. Whereas Dick Jauron has the passion of a rock, and not a very large one. He’s gone 7-9 for the past 3 years. In all of his years as an NFL Head Coach, he’s had one winning season. He is the triumph of mediocrity. He has one of the best running backs in the league yet wouldn’t use him in a game in Toronto against the future division champs. The play calling from he and Turk Shonert is as predictable as Church. It is simplistic and undeniably unexciting. Yes, when Ralph announces he will be retained, he’ll refer to the backing of the players. Well, maybe for a change, Mr. Wilson should concern himself with the folks who allow him to have a team believe. The Fans. The people who buy the tickets to watch this team underperform for 7 games a year, enjoying it while they can before the team moves to the TO are overwhelmingly in favor of showing Jauron a pink slip. Maybe Special Teams Coach Bobby April would be interest in the posistion. He shows passion, is creative with the devising of plays and most importantly he can’t be any worse.
Friends, in today’s issue of the The Hill, top Obama advisor, David Axelrod, states that he will not fulfill the role of chief political strategist for the White House. He stated the he will focus on the problems that are facing the nation, rather than the Obama re-election. I say he’s full of baloney. A popular saying in politics is that you can’t govern if you don’t win. That’s what politicians do, they run for office and do everything they can to ensure they can stay in that office. Barack Obama is no different. If David Axelrod thinks that his boss will focus only on the issues that concerns Americans, he is sorely mistaken. The fact of the matter is that the re-election of Barack Obama is an issue that concerns a great deal of Americans. It is irresponsible for the Obama White House to ignore that fact. While, its true that I am yearning for a Republican return to the White House in four years, Obama has an obligation to the folks who voted for him to make sure that he does everything in his power to maintain the base of power that led him to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He possess the greatest Democratic operative in a great while and wasting his talent would be a mistake, one that combined with those that have been made so far could prove fatal next election cycle.
There may be good news on the horizon for Governor Paterson and state legislative leaders. The New York Times is reporting that the state may receive an extra $5 billion in federal dollars for increased Medicaid reimbursements.
According to the Times:
In what would be a major boost to Gov. David A. Paterson’s efforts to close the largest deficit in state history, New York could gain as much as $5 billion in extra Medicaid financing as part of the stimulus package being drawn up by Congressional leaders and President-elect Barack Obama, Senator Charles E. Schumer said on Sunday.
(snip)
An Obama transition official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the package had not been finalized, said that the final figure would largely depend on the costs of other proposals, including money for infrastructure, energy and health programs that also would be part of the economic plan.
(snip)
“For the federal government to push money into the economy through the stimulus, but have the states taking money out by laying off people or cutting spending, would make no sense,” Mr. Schumer said. “It would be robbing Peter to pay Paul.”
Under current formulas, according to an analysis by Mr. Schumer’s office, New York would get $5 billion in Medicaid assistance in each of the next two years. The last time such aid was offered, in 2003, only $10 billion was appropriated for the entire country and for a shorter period.
This certainly would make the Governor’s job a lot easier. Heck, even Malcolm Smith would be able to get something like this through the Senate!
While we celebrate our holidays and many look forward to the chosen one Obama taking office, Hell is breaking out in the Mid East. Israeli warplanes and combat helicopters pounded the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing at least 155 people in the bloodiest day for Palestinians in more than 20 years of conflict. Hamas has promised to unleash Hell. Hamas Militants in the Gaza Strip responded with rocket salvoes.
Following Hamas’ violations of the truce agreement and the nonstop attacks on citizens in southern Israel, a decision was made on Wednesday, December 25, by the National Security Cabinet, to instruct the Israeli Defense Forces to take action in order to stop the rocket fire and terror attacks emanating form Gaza.
This will be Obama’s war. For those you who think he has Messianic powers to reign peace over us all, I sadly disagree. While I pray that you are right, I rather doubt it. Obama will be tested as his Vice President had suggested in the waning days of the campaign. President Obama will be forced to choose sides. Many Islamist’s hope that he will look towards them and support them. He can not, when push comes to shove he will choose Israel. Barack Obama at that point be forced to show the public that he understands what President Bush understood. That Islamic Militants are not our friends, and mean only to harm us.
NBC is reporting that two former New Mexico state officials have been questioned by a Federal grand jury investigating Governor (soon to be Commerce Secretary) Bill Richardson’s possible steering business to a political contributor.
According to the LA Times:
NBC’s Lisa Myers reports that two former state officials say they’ve recently been questioned by a federal grand jury specifically about allegations that Richardson or aides pushed state business worth nearly $1.5 million in fees toward CDR Financial Products in 2004. The company is headquartered in Beverly Hills.
This was about the same time as CDR’s founder, Rubin, donated $100,000 to two of Richardson’s political action committees; mainly it appears to cover expenses of the governor and his staff at the Democratic Party’s National Convention in Boston that summer.
Rubin also donated another $29,000 to Richardson’s unsuccessful presidential campaign this year and last.
The probe is part of a broad national federal exploration of “pay-to-play,” in which government officials reap financial or other benefits in return for state business.
Richardson has ignored reporters’ questions on the federal investigation, while a spokesman says he’s confident the relationship was entirely appropriate and the governor expects state employees to cooperate fully with federal investigators. A CDR spokesman also said the transactions were appropriate.
I find this surprising. I’ve been a fan of Richardson’s for sometime. Other than lying about being drafted by a major league baseball team, he seems to have a clean record. We will follow this for you and keep you posted of any updates.
