Senate Republicans To Stay On The Job Until The End Of March

I just talked to an friend from college who works for the Republicans in the State Senate.  I’ve thought about him a lot since the election.  He works for their central staff and I figure that with Malcolm Smith and the gang that couldn’t shoot straight about to take over, he would be out of a job, or about to receive a significant pay cut.

But he told me they received word about two weeks ago that they would all be staying on in their current positions, and at their current salaries through the end of March.

I’ve never heard of anything like this before.  One party wins a majority of seats (in this case the Democrats) and they let the other side keep their staff positions through the first three months of their term.

I’m also surprised that this hasn’t been picked up by other media sources.  This has profound implications on the upcoming legislative session.  Does this mean that Republican staff will be involved with the Governor’s and Speaker’s staff in negotiating the upcoming budget?

Is this part of a larger conspiracy on the part of Malcolm Smith?  Make the Republicans do the dirty work on the budget, then take over and tell the special interests that you weren’t the ones goring their ox?

Or does this mean that Smith and the Democrats have given up any hope of reaching a working majority?

This is all unbelievable.  I hope someone in the traditional press can do a little more digging on this — I’d really like to know what this all means.

Pass Me The Doritos — Stoners Hold Out Hope

Esquire magazine has an interesting story on how stoners are hoping President-elect Barack Obama will decriminalize marijuana.  It points to the following youtube clip of Obama stating his position on the War On Drugs — take a look for yourself.

The article then goes on to point out the large number of people favoring legalizing drugs who supported Obama financially:

Some of Obama’s biggest financial donors are friends of the legalization movement, St. Pierre notes. “Frankly, George Soros, Peter Lewis, and John Sperling — this triumvirate of billionaires — if those three men, who put up $50 to $60 million to get Democrats and Obama elected, can’t pick up the phone and actually get a one-to-one meeting on where this drug policy is going, then maybe it’s true that when you give money, you don’t expect favors.”

Another member of that moneyed group: Marsha Rosenbaum, the former head of the San Francisco office of the Drug Policy Alliance, who quit last year to become a fundraiser for Obama and “bundled” an impressive $204,000 for his campaign. She said that based on what she hears from inside the transition team, she expects Obama to play it very safe. “He said at one point that he’s not going to use any political capital with this — that’s a concern,” Rosenbaum tells me. And the Path to Change will probably have to pass through the Valley of Studies and Reports. “I’m hoping that what the administration will do,” she says, “is something this country hasn’t done since 1971, which is to undertake a presidential commission to look at drug policy, convene a group of blue-ribbon experts to look at the issue, and make recommendations.”

But ultimately, Rosenbaum remains confident that those recommendations would call for an end to the drug war. “Once everything settles down in the second term, we have a shot at seeing some real reform.”

Still, a certain paranoia prevails. Rumors about Obama’s choice for drug czar have lingered on Republican Congressman Jim Ramstad. “He’s been a standard anti-drug warrior for the whole time he’s been in Congress,” says St. Pierre. Another possibility is Atlanta police chief Richard Pennington, who raises fears in the legalization community of more of the same law-enforcement model. Another prospect stirring the bong waters is Dr. Don Vereen, the chief drug policy thinker on the transition team. “He’s really a believer in prohibition and he can excite an audience,” says Rosenbaum, who says a friend on the transition team refused to hint at final contenders for the drug czar pick. “I’m joking with him, ‘I’m going to have to open up the New York Times for this, aren’t I?’” His answer: “We’re going to send out smoke signals.”

Maybe this is the change they are hoping for!

Chambliss Wins Georgia Senate Race

The big question for our future is what happens to all of the people inspired by President-elect Barack Obama’s candidacy and participated in the electoral process for the first time.  Personally, the fact that it took someone to “inspire” these people is very concerning.

In many places, these inspired voters mindlessly voted for Democrats.  Right here in Rochester, the city turn out for Richard Dollinger was unprecedented — despite the fact that Dollinger had the job, ran for judge when he had it, quit the senate to avoid a difficult campaign and to run for judge again (only to lose), ran for party chairman — only to quit a few months later to run for judge again.

There are other disturbing examples across the state and country.  but the big question remains — what do these people do it future elections.  Did they turn out only for Obama and then return to political oblivion?

The Georgia run off for Senate hopefully provides some insight.  From the New York Times:

Relieved Republicans celebrated a resounding win in Georgia’s hard-fought U.S. Senate runoff, a victory that denied Democrats a filibuster-proof majority and cemented the state’s reputation as a GOP bastion.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss trounced Democrat Jim Martin Tuesday night, winning his second term by a margin of more than 10 percentage points. The race dashed Democrats’ hopes of a 60-seat majority immune to Senate filibusters, which would have given President-elect Barack Obama a stronger hand moving his agenda.

(snip)

Martin hoped to capitalize on excitement surrounding Obama but was unable to get many of the president elect’s voters back to the polls one month after the general election.

Let’s hope the trend continues.  I prefer to have elections decided by people who read newspapers, tv news and even political blogs, rather than people who mindlessly follow a charismatic politician.

Obama’s Road to Damascus

Thanks to Jdalaney for sending us the following story

By John Perazzo
FrontPageMagazine.com | Tuesday, November 11, 2008

History will record that Barack Obama’s first act of diplomacy as America’s president-elect took place two days after his election victory, when he dispatched his senior foreign-policy adviser, Robert Malley, to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad-to outline for them the forthcoming administration’s Mideast policy vis-à-vis those nations. An aide to Malley reports, “The tenor of the messages was that the Obama administration would take into greater account Egyptian and Syrian interests” than has President Bush. The Bush administration, it should be noted, has rightly recognized Syria to be not only a chief supporter of the al Qaeda insurgency in Iraq, but also the headquarters of the terrorist organization Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the longtime sponsor of Hamas-the terrorist army whose founding charter is irrevocably committed to the annihilation of Israel. Yet unlike President Bush, Obama and Malley have called for Israel to engage in peace negotiations with Syria.

A Harvard-trained lawyer and Rhodes Scholar, Robert Malley is no newcomer to the Obama team. In 2007, Obama selected him as a foreign policy adviser to his campaign. At the time, Malley was (and still is today) the Middle East and North Africa Program Director for the International Crisis Group (ICG), which receives funding from the Open Society Institute of George Soros (who, incidentally, serves on the ICG Executive Committee).

In his capacity with ICG, Malley directs a number of analysts who focus their attention most heavily on the Arab-Israeli conflict, the political and military developments in Iraq, and Islamist movements across the Middle East. Prior to joining ICG, Malley served as President Bill Clinton’s Special Assistant for Arab-Israeli Affairs (1998-2001), and as National Security Adviser Sandy Berger’s Executive Assistant (1996-1998).

Robert Malley was raised in France. His lineage is noteworthy. His father, Simon Malley (1923-2006), was a key figure in the Egyptian Communist Party. A passionate hater of Israel, the elder Malley was a close friend and confidante of the late PLO terrorist Yasser Arafat; an inveterate critic of “Western imperialism”; a supporter of various revolutionary “liberation movements,” particularly the Palestinian cause; a beneficiary of Soviet funding; and a supporter of the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. According to American Thinker news editor Ed Lasky, Simon Malley “participated in the wave of anti-imperialist and nationalist ideology that was sweeping the Third World [and] … wrote thousands of words in support of struggle against Western nations.”

In a July 2001 op-ed which Malley penned for the New York Times, he alleged that Israeli-not Palestinian-inflexibility had caused the previous year’s Camp David peace talks (brokered by Bill Clinton) to fall apart. This was one of several controversial articles Malley has written-some he co-authored with Hussein Agha, a former adviser to Arafat-blaming Israel and exonerating Arafat (the most prolific Jew-killer since Adolph Hitler) for the failure of the peace process.

Malley’s identification of Israel as the cause of the Camp David impasse has been widely embraced by Palestinian and Arab activists around the world, by Holocaust deniers like Norman Finkelstein, and by anti-Israel publications such as Counterpunch. It should be noted that Malley’s account of the Camp David negotiations is entirely inconsistent with the recollections of the key figures who participated in those talks-specifically, then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, then-U.S. President Bill Clinton, and then-U.S. Ambassador Dennis Ross (Clinton’s Middle East envoy).

Malley also has written numerous op-eds urging the U.S. to disengage from Israel to some degree, and recommending that America reach out to negotiate with its traditional Arab enemies such as Syria, Hamas, Hezbollah (a creature of Iran dedicated to the extermination of the Jews and death to America), and Muqtada al-Sadr (the Shiite terrorist leader in Iraq).

In addition, Malley has advised nations around the world to establish relationships with, and to send financial aid to, the Hamas-led Palestinian government in Gaza. In Malley’s calculus, the electoral victory that swept Hamas into power in January 2006 was a manifestation of legitimate Palestinian “anger at years of humiliation and loss of self-respect because of Israeli settlement expansion, Arafat’s imprisonment, Israel’s incursions, [and] Western lecturing …”

Moreover, Malley contends that it is both unreasonable and unrealistic for Israel or Western nations to demand that Syria sever its ties with Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or Iran. Rather, he suggests that if Israel were to return the Golan Heights (which it captured in the 1967 Six Day War, and again in the 1973 Yom Kippur War-two conflicts sparked by Arab aggression which sought so permanently wipe the Jewish state off the face of the earth) to Syrian control, Damascus would be inclined to pursue peace with Israel.

Malley has criticized the U.S. for allegedly remaining “on the sidelines” and being a “no-show” in the overall effort to bring peace to the nations of the Middle East. Exhorting the Bush administration to change its policy of refusing to engage diplomatically with terrorists and their sponsoring states, Malley wrote in July 2006: “Today the U.S. does not talk to Iran, Syria, Hamas, the elected Palestinian government or Hezbollah…. The result has been a policy with all the appeal of a moral principle and all the effectiveness of a tired harangue.”

This inclination to negotiate with any and all enemies of the U.S. and Israel-an impulse which Malley has outlined clearly and consistently-has had a powerful influence on Barack Obama.

It is notable that six months ago the Obama campaign and Malley hastily severed ties with one another after the Times of London reported that Malley had been meeting privately with Hamas leaders on a regular basis-something Obama had publicly pledged never to do. At the time, Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt minimized the significance of this monumentally embarrassing revelation, saying: “Rob Malley has, like hundreds of other experts, provided informal advice to the campaign in the past. He has no formal role in the campaign and he will not play any role in the future.”

But indeed, within hours after Obama’s election victory, Malley was back as a key player in the president-elect’s team of advisors-on his way to Syria. Mr. Obama, meanwhile, received a most friendly communication from Hamas, congratulating him on his “historic victory.”

Li Lo Excited About Our First Colored President

We told you back in September that Lindsay Lohan didn’t like Sarah Palin.

Well, according to published reports, she is very excited about a Barack Obama Presidency:

NEW YORK (AP) - Lindsay Lohan referred to President-elect Barack Obama as the country’s “first colored president” in an interview on “Access Hollywood.” Describing her experience on Election Day, Lohan said: “It was really exciting. It’s an amazing feeling. It’s our first colored president.”

A spokeswoman for Lohan didn’t immediately return messages left Wednesday.

Interviewer Maria Menounos didn’t question the 22-year-old actress on her use of the term. “Access Hollywood” also didn’t cite her remark in its online story, but did post an “extended interview” video on its Web site that included the remark.

A spokesman for the syndicated entertainment news program said in a statement Wednesday: “We believe the word in question that Ms. Lohan used was unintelligible.”

Lohan blogged about her support of Obama during the presidential campaign.

Get Your Checkbook Ready — State Democats Are Already Planning On Reaching Into Your Pocket!

The Buffalo News has a story about possible discussions to raise the state tax on gasoline and cutting aid to “wealthier” school districts. From the Buffalo News:

Gov. David A. Paterson, who consistently has railed against raising taxes to solve the state’s fiscal woes, opened the door Tuesday to one possible revenue raiser — gasoline taxes.

The issue came up at the end of an interview with a Syracuse radio station when Paterson was asked about a possible increase in the gasoline tax. The last time the state cut gasoline taxes — in 2006, when the state tax was capped at 8 cents a gallon — retailers grabbed the savings instead of passing them on to consumers, he said.

“That’s something that might be considered,” Paterson said as gas prices continued to fall across the state.

(snip)

In response to a question from a reporter about school aid cuts, he agreed that across-the-board reductions are not fair and that the state needs to “make needs assessments when we make the cuts.” He did not elaborate but appeared to signal that wealthier, suburban school districts could bear more pain in the coming cuts than poorer urban and rural systems.

An increase in the gas tax would spare residents of NYC from an increase.  And wealthier school districts already pay more in property taxes.  Monroerising.com has warned for months that a complete Democratic take over of state government would be bad for us, but we didn’t expect it to start this soon!

Meet Me For Some Chinese Food and Then We Can Catch the Election Results!

Great News for all our Buffalo area readers who enjoy Chinese Food — The China King in Hamburg has been cleared to reopen.

According to the Buffalo News

Patrons will once again be free to eat at China King in Hamburg, the South Park Avenue restaurant shut down last month after a witness reported seeing a worker butchering a deer on the premises.

(snip)

It is illegal in New York State to have a dead animal in a food service place. It is also illegal to serve meat that hasn’t been butchered in a licensed facility. In addition to paying a $1,000 fine, the owners had to sanitize the kitchen and refamiliarize themselves with sanitation codes. The owners also had to fix their refrigeration unit, which was found not to be working properly. And a worker at the restaurant will have to take a food safety course in the next six months.

Boy, talk about job killing government regulation.  Everyone knows that deer meat is leaner and a lot cheaper when it is pick up on the side of the road. Not to mention that when it’s served with a sweet and sour sauce, it is simply delicious!

Chris Lee Has Big Lead In New SurveyUSA Poll

I lifted the following from our friends over at the BuffaloBean:

I just heard that Channel 2 News released a new SurveyUSA Poll during their noon news broadcast with the following results for the congressional race in the 26th district:

Chris Lee 48%
Alice Kryzan 34%
Undecided 18%

Looks like Alice’s smear campaign isn’t working out for her, and Chris Lee’s message is resonating big with the voters.

I’m in complete agreement with our favorite liberal jacksonsmiles when it come to Alice Kryzan.  She should be ashamed of her campaign.  Lying about Chris Lee and his family is disgraceful.  It looks like to voters aren’t buying her non-sense!

Randy Kuhl Attends Monroe County Independence Party Event

U.S. Representative John R. “Randy” Kuhl, Jr. attended the Monroe County Independence Party meet and greet last night. Representative Kuhl, who is running on the Independence Party line, was on hand to welcome aboard the new county chairman and board members.

“I have always worked to be an independent voice who puts my constituents’ needs first,” said Representative Kuhl. “I am proud to run on the Independence Party line and look forward to working with party members across our district as we build a stronger, more competitive economy for Western New York.”

In July, Kuhl submitted over 1100 signatures from Independence Party members to qualify for the ballot, including over 550 signatures from Monroe County. Kuhl received more than 5,200 votes on the Independence Party line in 2006.
