I Glad I Don’t Have To Vote In The Democrat Primary For 26th CD

The gloves are off in the final days of the Democrat Primary for NY 26 Congressional race.  Here are Jack Davis’ and Jon Powers’ hard hitting commercials. The sad part is that both look fair and accurate to me.

To top it off City Newspaper had this to say about the third candidate Alice Kryzan:

A troubling aspect of Kryzan’s background is that, early in her career, she represented Occidental Chemical in litigation brought by Love Canal residents. She ultimately helped settle the lawsuit.

Here are the commercials:

Alice Kryzan Ad Sums It All Up In The 26th C.D.

Things are continuing to heat up in the 26th Congressional District primary between Jon Powers, Jack Davis and Alice Kryzan.  Many insiders and others watching this race have been wondering when Alice Kyzan was going to get into the race and it looks like she now has.  ErieDem pointed out this article in today’s Buffalo News.

It looks like Alice is trying to pick off two birds with one ad here.  In a rarely seen political move, Kryzan takes an appropriate swipe at both Powers and Davis for their collective foolishness and terrible campaigns they’ve both run thus far.

Right now, I’m in full agreement with ErieDem.  Neither Powers nor Davis deserve to win this primary race.  Alice Kryzan may very well be the best chance the democrats have in the 26th C.D.

Jack Davis Reveals John Powers Cited For Disorderly Conduct In 2004

Jon Powers’ is getting hit from all sides.  You’ve seen our post about questions surrounding his employment plan charity, War Kids Relief. Now our friends over at the Buffalo Bean report that Jack Davis’ campaign discovered that Jon Powers was cited for disorderly conduct in 2004.

According to the Buffalo Bean:

The flurry of charges and countercharges began when the Davis campaign produced documents showing that Powers, a graduate of John Carroll University in Cleveland, was cited by a Cleveland Heights, Ohio, police officer on Oct. 23, 2004, for disorderly conduct. In his citation, the officer accused Powers of directing obscene comments at him.

(snip)

“At a time when he’s under investigation and running from revelations of election fraud and bribery, the Davis campaign is practicing the lowest form of politics by distorting simple facts,” Dillon said. “Jon was written a ticket for jaywalking, never arrested and never showed any disrespect to law enforcement.”

But a spokeswoman for the Cleveland Heights Municipal Court said Powers changed his plea of not guilty to the original Class 4 misdemeanor charge to “no contest” in connection with a minor misdemeanor on Jan. 11, 2005, and that there was no mention of jaywalking in the final disposition of the case.

More lies from Jon Jon’s hired guns. It appears that the truth is his real enemy!

Jack Davis Says He’s Sorry

Jack Davis is sorry for bribing the wives of  Monroe and Erie County Independence Party Officials. According to the Buffalo News:

Democratic congressional candidate Jack Davis apologized today for $10,000 in payments he made to the wives of Western New York’s most influential Independence Party leaders that critics called “bribes.”

The candidate, who has promised to spend $3 million of his own money in his third attempt at winning the seat of retiring Republican Thomas N. Reynolds, said his payments to the wives of Independence Chairment Anthony L. Orsini Jr. of Erie County and Rafael Colon of Monroe County for “consulting” services constituted a “mistake.”

“I am severing my relationships with the consultants in question and apologize for my part in the spectacle,” he said.

Davis and the two chairmen have endured criticism from many quarters since The Buffalo News reported on July 18 that he paid $5,000 to Coastal Consulting South, a newly incorporated firm headed by Orsini’s wife, Judith, out of the couple’s mobile home in Venice, Fla. He also paid $5,000 to Blanca Semidey, wife of Colon, who was forced out of his post by fellow Independence members who called the payments a “bribe.”

The payments came at a time when the often crucial Independence Party nomination was still unsettled.

Buffalo News Editorial slams Powers and Davis

As all our readers are aware we have been following Jon Powers and Jack Davis with what we believe is their willingness to say anything and do anything to win. With Jon Powers we have followed his War Kids Relief fund raiser. For Jack Davis we posted a huge story on his hiring Blanca Colon the wife of Independent Party boss  as a consultant.  It looks like the Buffalo News has editorialized on these and other things as well. What started out as bloggers digging, has turned into editorials and news stories. Many of the facts we have posted have become confirmed by major area news papers. Here is the latest editorial from the Buffalo News dated August 8th

This is what happens when you want to win too much. You pretend that the wives of influential party chairman are “consultants” and pay them $5,000 each for their “work,” or you pitch your altruistic efforts as “path breaking” when, in reality, they fall far short of the mark. With behavior like that, you could be a congressman. Coincidentally, that is just what Jack Davis and Jon Powers want to be. The Democratic candidates for the 26th Congressional District want it so much that they risk the accusation that they are willing to do anything to win. They should stop and take a deep breath. Western New Yorkers don’t need either of them that badly.

The former Army captain Jon Powers touts the War Kids Relief nonprofit organization he started to protect Iraqi youth from Islamic radicals, but critics say that, besides paying Powers about $77,000 in salary, the organization has done little but send some soccer balls and backpacks to Iraq.

Niagara County Republican Party Chairman Henry Wojtaszek wants his rivals in the Democratic Party to give Jack Davis his money back.

From the Niagara Gazette’s, Mark Scheer Wrote:

A day after the release of a letter in which Democratic Party Chairman Dan Rivera called for a district attorney’s investigation into the handling of election petitions by Davis staffers, Wojtaszek publicly called on his Democratic counterpart to return every dollar his party has ever received from the Akron businessman he now accuses of wrongdoing.

“I believe it is important for political parties to try to maintain the highest political standards so voters can have faith in the integrity of our system,” Wojtaszek said in a statement released Tuesday. “So if Chairman Rivera believes Jack Davis broke the law, I applaud him for coming forward. But if he really believes in honesty and integrity, he will return the tens of thousands of dollars he has taken from the man he now describes as a lawbreaker.”

Last week, Rivera sent a letter to Niagara County District Attorney Michael Violante in which he called for an investigation into “irregularities” related to petitions filed by Davis supporters in the race for the 26th Congressional District. Rivera said he has provided the DA’s office with notarized affidavits from nine individuals who claimed to have signed petitions that were supposed to have been witnessed by a female Davis staff member, Kelly Taylor, but were actually circulated by a male member of the Davis team. Davis backers insist the petitions were legal and have been approved by the state Board of Elections.

On Tuesday, Rivera dismissed Wojtaszek’s request to return contributions from Davis as the latest in a series of attempts to discredit the local Democratic Party under his leadership. Rivera said local Democrats have received donations from Davis whom he said has also sponsored a couple of the party’s golf outings. He added that the contributions — no matter what type or amount — do not add up to Rivera overlooking what he believes may have been violations of election law on the part of Davis staffers.

“Is what Wojtaszek saying is that he’d keep his mouth shut if someone paid him enough money, even if he knew they did something illegal?” Rivera said.

Rivera insisted that his issue was not with Davis himself, but rather with members of the Davis campaign who handled his petitions.

“I never said Jack Davis has done anything illegal,” Rivera said. “I never stated that.”

Powers Goes After Davis For Petition Irregularities

Our good friend Jacksonsmiles accused monroerising.com of playing favorites in the Democratic fight for the 26th CD because we have been silent of the charges leveled by the Powers’ camp about Jack Davis’ petitions.  Jackson buddy, we aren’t playing favorites — I didn’t see the allegations.

Here is a D&C Blog post about the subject:

Powers Camp Goes After Davis’ Petitions

Jonathan Powers’ congressional campaign and Niagara County Democratic Chairman Dan Rivera today asked for an investigation into Democratic challenger Jack Davis’ nominating petitions.

Rivera wrote a letter to Niagara County District Attorney Michael Violante asking him to look into why a Davis staffer, Kelly Taylor, is listed as a signed witness to the petition, even though she didn’t allegedly witness the petitions being signed.

Davis’ opponents said they received nine affidavits from petition signers saying Taylor did not bring them the petition or witness their signature.

“Once again Jack Davis has shown he lacks the judgment to represent us in Congress,” said John Gerken, Powers spokesman. “The voters of the 26th district are sick of Washington’s fraud and bribery. They deserve a Congressman they can be proud of.”

Powers and Davis are running in a Democratic primary in the 26th District, which runs from the Buffalo suburbs to the Rochester suburbs.

I found John Gerken’s comments very interesting.  When was the first time “Jack Davis has shown he lacks the judgment to represent us in Congress”?  Was it when you were collecting a check from him two years ago?

Buffalo News Story — War Kids Relief More Hype Than Help

The Buffalo News had a great story “Powers’ Iraq outreach ends up as more hype than help” on Jon Powers’ War Kids Relief. According to the Buffalo News:

Now, on the campaign trail, Powers continually touts stories in Newsweek, the New York Times, The Buffalo News and NBC News about his plan to raise as much as $7 million for Iraqi orphanages and youth centers.

But while Powers’ Web site highlights War Kids Relief as “quickly recognized for its path breaking work,” critics say it accomplished little beyond shipping a few soccer balls and backpacks to Iraq –and paying Powers about $77,000 worth of salary over 18 months.

They also say that while the good intentions even of congressional candidates are entitled to fail, Powers never mentions that War Kids Relief fell far short of accomplishing its goal.

(snip)

Powers, 30, acknowledges that War Kids Relief never accomplished many of its goals, mainly because Congress declined to fund the program. He also said he is not required until Aug. 15 to file Form 990 to the Internal Revenue Service to account for receipts and expenditures. He acknowledged that the organization raised between $150,000 and $250,000 over the course of its existence, with a substantial percentage dedicated to his salary.

(snip)

Under King’s leadership, the program began to receive some attention around his hometown of Worcester, Mass. The class of Cynthia Bazinet, a high school government teacher in Auburn, Mass., adopted it as part of a senior peace studies course and raised $262.

But when it came time to donate the money in December of last year, War Kids Relief had terminated it Web site. She contacted King, who said they ought to find another charity to help.

Bazinet said that she tried confronting Powers about the situation in various conversations on political blog sites but that he always avoided giving a direct answer. He offered to discuss the matter privately, she said, but never online. “If you go out and [raise money], you had better be prepared to answer questions,” she added. “I don’t care if he is a vet.”

King said he did his best to raise funds privately but found limited success. He did continue to push the program in Congress and sent a shipment of soccer balls and backpacks to Iraq.

“I’m just not a very good fundraiser, I guess,” he said. “And without money, you can’t accomplish much.”

Let’s see, the only leads they had was government funding from Ted Kennedy and John Kerry.  All they sent was a shipment of soccer balls and backpacks.  And he pays himself $77,000 in salary — it’s starting to look like our hunch back in April — that War Kids Relief was little more than a resume builder for a congressional wannabe was almost right on.  We should have realized that it was also the source of a nice paycheck for Jon Jon.  Kind of like when he tried to get his campaign to pay his rent — a violation of FCC guidelines.

If Jack Davis is successful getting this story out, it should be lights out Sweet Prince.  Jon Jon is in big trouble.  I really thought those Buffalo Bills schedules were going to do the trick!

Jon Powers’ Goes After Jack Davis On Petition Fraud

In an earlier comment, our good friend Jacksonsmiles accuses us of being unfair and not pointing out irregularities on Jack Davis petitions.  Jackson, when you are right you’re right.  Here is a post on the D&C blog from Monday — I really didn’t see it until I looked for it after Jackson’s comment.

More Fall Out From Jack Davis Payoffs

The Buffalo news has a story on foes of Erie County Independence Party Chairman Anthony Orsini calling for his resignation over the payoff his wife received from Democratic Congressional candidate Jack Davis.

According to the Buffalo News:

Just days after the chairman of the Monroe County Independence Party resigned over charges that his wife accepted what critics called “bribe” money from the campaign of Democratic congressional candidate Jack Davis, top members of the party in Erie County are demanding the same from Anthony L. Orsini, their chairman.

(snip)

“It’s very improper. It stinks,” said Koziol, the retired chief custodian for the Lackawanna School District. “It smells of bribery.”

“He gave the perception that the endorsement was for sale,” added Gaughan, a registered nurse. “That’s a poor way of moving government forward here.”

But unlike Colon, Orsini said he is not going anywhere. He described Koziol and Gaughan as an integral part of an attempt by Erie County Democrats to take over the Independence Party. He also charged that through the influence of Democrats, Koziol received Erie County Water Authority jobs for children of his girlfriend while Gaughan recently got a state Health Department job.

This story is really showing the Independence Party as the farce it really is.  It stands for nothing and it appears that Democrats across the state are trying to infiltrate it so they can control the endorsements.  A few years ago, Republicans controlled the party to a point where former Governor George Pataki received the party’s designation over party founder Tom Golisano.

That’s quite a political legacy Tom Golisano has left us with.  And now after creating this mess and walking away, he’s going to help the Democrats try to take over the state Senate?  Go figure!
