Could Socialism be the message that turns it around for McCain?

(Editor’s note: this is Earl’s first post — Welcome to monroerisng.)

Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Saturday accused Democratic rival Barack Obama of favoring a socialistic economic approach by supporting tax cuts and tax credits McCain says would merely shuffle wealth rather than creating it. This position was first fostered by Obama’s comments to “Joe The Plumber”. When Obama said “we want to spread the wealth”

An interesting poll at TipLine.com asks the following questions

  1. Agree or disagree: I am willing to pay higher taxes in order to support more social programs?
  2. Agree or disagree: I believe the government should control or own key industries such as health care and energy?
  3. Agree or disagree: The U.S. is evolving into a socialist state
  4. Agree or disagree: I believe it is the government’s role to redistribute wealth and income?

It was somewhat predictable along Democrat and Republican lines.  The Democrats somewhat favored the socialist positions and Republicans heavily opposed it. There is an interesting position of opposing socialism from a small number of Democrats and a large number of Independents. This is close to what Republicans believe.  You can see the entire poll at http://www.tipponline.com/social.html.

I admit it’s an uphill battle for McCain.  Joe the plumber may be what it takes to bring him back from the brink. Now he needs to steadily push hard uphill for three weeks.

For those of you who think its over. Remember with two weeks to go it looked like Jimmy (the worst president in history) Carter would defeat Reagan by 4-5 points. For the real old timers and historians we always need to remember this photo.

Truman was the quintessential populist.  A message John McCain is now fighting hard for.
