The Time Is Right For Upstate New York to Secede
After thinking about it long and hard, I truly think that the inevitable coronation of Caroline Kennedy to a Senate seat she doesn’t deserve is the last straw. It is time for Upstate New York to secede from Metropolitan New York City.
For too long our destinies have been controlled by the interests of New York City. The welfare of Upstaters is being dragged down by the anchor that is attached to our southern border. Some folks who comment on this post will say, “where will we get the money that is currently contributed by resident of New York City?” Well, I say, the loss of NYC will result in more than 10,000,000 people being dropped from the population that, we, in Upstate need to care for.
This includes this data gotten from the State Office of Temporary and Disabilities Assistance: In September of 2008, the state paid out $66,775,067 in temporary assistance to families. This includes $41,099,000 to 147,993 families in NYC, $1,121,937 to 28,095 in Orange County, $3,509,162 to 6,568 in Westchester County, $2,089,629 for 5,153 in Nassau County, and $2,369,180 for 6,317 in Suffolk County. This, plus the totals of Ulster, Dutchess, Putnam, and Rockland counties totals $51,701,571 or 77.4% of what the state paid out in temporary family assistance in September to New York families.
Some other folks will question, “how would we survive without Wall St?” We’ll have that many less problems because state economy won’t ebb and flow with bankers and investors who are drunk at the switch. How do states like Nebraska, Kansas, the Dakotas have success without relying on the Stock Market. With a much smaller population, New Amsterdam or South Ontario or North York (whatever we would call it) could get back to basics without having to be subservient to NYC interests.
We let our tax dollars pay for billion dollar stadiums for the Yankees and Mets. Currently, every important state leader hails from South of the red line that is in the map above. As much as I like Dean “Dino” Skelos, he dosen’t know the plight of the upstate population. He’s from Long Island, and god bless him, but he’s no Joe Bruno, he’s not the one who should be carrying the torch for a forgotten minority of people in the largest sector of the state.
Governor Paterson, Speaker Silver, Minority or Majority Leader Smith, Attorney General Cuomo, Comptroller DiNapoli, Senator Schumer, current Senator Clinton, future Senator Kennedy all are based in the New York City area. For goodness sake, two consecutive Governors have had their offices in New York City, only coming to Albany when the photo op or business entailed. People like Brooklyn Party Boss Vito Lopez gets a sit down meeting with Caroline Kennedy, but where’s the sitdown with her for the Democratic chairs in Niagara, Broome, or Jefferson counties?
However, these are just a few of the reasons I believe that Upstate New York needs to become the 51st State in the Union.
