Speaker Silver Starting to Feel The Heat

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver must be feeling the heat.  According to the New York Sun, one of his political opponents is using rape charges against his former top aide against him in his primary campaign for the Democratic nomination for his Assembly seat.

The mailer was sent out yesterday to more than 35,000 residents in the Lower Manhattan district where Mr. Silver is facing a primary challenge from two political opponents. It includes a letter from Elizabeth Crothers, a former legislative aide who accused the speaker’s former chief counsel of raping her in 2001.

Ms. Crothers is supporting one of Mr. Silver’s opponents in the race, Paul Newell, and has taken an active role in the campaign by publicly criticizing Mr. Silver for his handling of the rape allegation — and accusing him of attempting to cover it up.

She writes in the mailer that when she went to the speaker for help after she was allegedly raped, he defended his former aide, Michael Boxley. Two years later, Mr. Boxley was indicted on charges that he raped a different legislative staffer, and he pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct.

“When I was powerless and alone, Sheldon Silver sat silent. His decision to protect a close political advisor had devastating consequences on more than one life. Like many politicians today who believe they are above the law, Sheldon Silver put his own political ambitions above justice. New York deserves better,” she wrote.

Mr. Perrin said he has no ties to Mr. Silver or the candidates seeking to unseat him. He said he read about Ms. Crothers in the newspaper and decided to help her tell her story.

“I know it’s incredulous that people actually do something about something they read that bothers them, but we are those people,” he said. He said he wanted every elected official in New York to learn a lesson from Ms. Crothers.

“If a young woman on your staff says another staff member raped her, you don’t just hold a press conference and say, ‘I have complete faith in my staffer.’ That’s not what you do,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Silver, Sisa Moyo, has said that the speaker has acknowledged that he was wrong about Mr. Boxley and has felt anguish over what Ms. Crothers went through.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

RICHard Dollinger Doesn’t Sign Fair Campaign Pledge?

The Democrat & Chronicle reported earlier today on the list of names read off by the League of Women Voters at their press conference of the candidates who signed the League’s Fair Campaign Pledge and unsurprisingly, one name in particular was not read off — Nasty Dirty Tricks Politician RICHard Dollinger.

We did some research to see if there could have been a mistake but we found out that candidates could either fax the signed pledge, mail it (postmarked this past Friday) or shown up in person to sign the pledge.  It was reported that Assemblyman Joe Errigo sent three faxes of the signed pledge to make sure he was covered.  The League knew that Assemblyman David Koon had not mailed or faxed his pledge, but was there in person to sign it (BTW, Koon’s opponent, Dave Bonnachi, signed the pledge).  Basically, letting the League know you were supportive of fair and non-malicious campaigning was idiot proof.  So either Dollinger chose to continue running his negative, mud-slinging campaign or he is an idiot. Did we go back to 1954?

I remember watching Joe Biden’s son in the Democratic convention. He told the story how of his father had just lost his wife and baby daughter in a auto accident in 1972, not a single colleague, friend or competitor advised him to quit his newly won Senate seat to raise his two little surviving sons.

Instead his son told the story of how he juggled his political life with his personal life. He was sworn into office from the hospital where his injured boys were healing. He took to commuting an hour and a half each way from Delaware to Washington. When Biden’s second wife gave birth to a daughter, no one thought to ask him to step aside and stay home.

So why does the Main Stream Media and the Democrats think that its impossible for Sara Palin to raise a child with Downs Syndrome? The New York Times printed a front page article noting that some unnamed women argue over “whether there are enough hours in the day for her to take on the vice presidency, and whether she is right to try” Barrack Obama has two small children, why doesn’t the same criteria apply to him? Where are the people of NOW? Where are the feminists that would staunchly defend her if she agreed with their policies?

Radio Station 950 AM Drops Liberal Format

Air America, the progressive radio network, has been dropped by WROC-AM (950) in favor of programming supplied by ESPN sports talk.

Air America features liberal talk shows hosted by Thom Hartmann, Rachel Maddow and Lockport native Stephanie Miller, who held down the morning slot. WROC also used some non-Air America personalities, such as noon to 3 p.m. host Ed Schultz.

“It was strictly a ratings-revenue move for us. We felt it would align more with our goals here in Rochester,” he said. While progressive radio in some markets has drawn better ratings than some of its conservative counterparts, particularly Schultz’s show, in Rochester “it didn’t deliver the revenue ratings to keep it alive,” said John Thomas, operations manager at Entercom Rochester.

This should not come as a shock to many people in my opinion.  As this happens, there have been reports from the House and Senate about the Fair Doctrine, which would basically silence the Republican and Conversative talk shows on the radio.

As for John Thomas’ quote, “it was strictly a ratings-revenue move for us,” I find it funny that conservative talk shows such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity have some of the highest ratings on talk radio.  On the flip side of it all, there have been reports that The New York Times is losing roughly $1million dollars a day due to lack of sales.  They claim it is technology like the Internet and 24 hour news channels pushing them out the door.  Maybe it is the far-left journalism that is being pushed from the very top of the organization that is driving people away.

I Wonder If Kathy Konst Has Any Regrets?

It seems to me that a number of people who I would ordinarily consider normal have the desire to serve in Washington. I wonder if Kathy Konst has that desire.

If she does, she must really regret her decision to take Tom Golisano and Steve Pigeon up on their offer to bankroll her run for the state Senate if she abandoned the race for Democratic endorsement for the 26th CD.

The two main contenders, Jack Davis and Jon Powers have savagely attacked each other. Davis has sent between 15 and 20 pieces of mail advertising his website with all the negative stuff on Jon Powers. Powers has responded with hard hitting television commercials.

I’m looking forward to primary night because I don’t have the faintest idea of who is going to win this one. It appears that Alice Kryzan doesn’t have the financial resources to compete, but Powers and Davis have done such a good job trashing each other, anything is possible.

If Kathy Konst had stayed in this race, she’d probably stood an excellent chance to win it and be strong enough to compete with Chris Lee in November. Instead, she took what she thought was the easy route and now has to defend the likes of Malcolm Smith who is ethically challenged and resorts to playing the race card when he is caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Taking the easy way out isn’t always the way it seems.

Did The Bishop Hear Us — Dollinger Event Moved!

I’m not sure if Bishop Clark reads monroerising.com or not, but I’m please to report that we received an e-mail stating that RICHard Dollinger’s campaign event will not be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Greece.

According to an e-mail we received, the event will be held in a park in Greece.

I’m not sure why the change in location.  If I know Democrats, it might very well be that they had an objection to Dollinger holding and event in a place like a Catholic Church. Think about how offensive it would be for the NOW Crowd, gay marriage advocates, atheists, etc. I can’t imagine any real people will attend this so alienating the liberal/progressive/socialists would mean no-one would show for this direct to blogosphere campaign event.

Think about it.  Who was the numbskull who thought up having a campaign forum on our schools on the eve of the opening day of school?

I’m sure many families are having the conversation –

“Honey, you get the kids ready for school — make sure lunches are made, the backpacks are set, Timmy and Sally have all of their supplies, make sure their clothes are laid out — I’ve got to go listen to RICHard Dollinger blather on about how much better our kids education will be if we elect him to the Senate — after all he did such a great job the 10 years he had the job.”

Way to show how you can relate to the commoners!  Just a thought, you might want to leave the Lexus home and drive in one of your campaign worker’s car.

The Liberals Better Be Careful With Sarah Palin

The Politico has a great piece on Sarah Palin’s selection as John McCain’s running mate. Liberal hypocrites are all over this woman for being human.  If they aren’t careful, their hatred for Republicans will backfire during this campaign.

So far — and it is hard to tell what the future may hold for Palin’s unexpected national candidacy — the travails of the Palin family probably seem awfully familiar to many average Americans. It is this averageness that makes her such a politically promising running mate for John McCain — and such a dangerous opponent for Democrats. Many voters will find it easy to identify with her family’s struggles — a significant advantage in an election where the voting calculus is so unusually and intensely personal.

(snip)

Unlike running mates from both parties, dating back decades, the Palin family isn’t part of the moneyed elite or the governing class. Neither wife nor husband is the scion of a well-connected family. Sarah Palin attended a state school, and her brushes with the law are of the same nettlesome kind that drive recreational fishermen crazy in all 50 states.

(snip)

Even the governor’s own Trooper-gate scandal, in which Palin is alleged to have exerted undue pressure to fire a state trooper, is suffused with an element that many families can identify with: one sister stepping in on behalf of another in an acrimonious dispute with a brother-in-law.

Powerful media organizations are beginning to pour resources into this story, so much more damaging twists and turns may await. But assuming the accusations don’t grow more serious, it is of a considerably different nature as an abuse of power than the last Trooper-gate scandal to rock the political world — the one in which Bill Clinton was alleged to use his state troopers in Arkansas to procure women as sex partners. That wouldn’t excuse Palin’s actions, of course, but it would frame them in such a way that could limit the political damage.

(snip)

With a pregnant teenage daughter and an infant with Down syndrome, the Palins, it seems, have been caught up in the same struggles of everyday life that confront many American families. And it poses a difficult challenge for Democrats because she will be juxtaposed against Biden, a United States senator with 35 years of experience.

Biden has his own compelling narrative; he commuted back to Wilmington, Del., daily for years to be with his young sons after his wife and infant daughter died in an automobile accident. But it is revealing that the first round of tough stories after his nomination explored conflicts of interest between Biden family members and one of the nation’s biggest asbestos litigation law firms. That’s a long way from fishing license violations.

I must say, the more I hear about Sarah Palin, the more she intrigues me.  This pick makes me more comfortable with John McCain and his ability to win this race.

Sun Makes History: First Spotless Month in a Century

The sun has reached a milestone not seen for nearly 100 years: an entire month has passed without a single visible sunspot being noted. The event is significant as many climatologists now believe solar magnetic activity – which determines the number of sunspots — is an influencing factor for climate on earth, scientists now fear this will cause an ice age.

The question remains for Al Gore: Did earths global warming cause the sun to not spot? An ice age would be disaterous for a global warming alarmists making huge dollars off of the scam.  Democrats are wondering:  How can this be blamed on Republicans?

Global Warming Still Scientifically Contested

Though sometimes difficult, one can still cull authoritative information which scientifically contests politically correct viewpoints regarding global warming. And with costly global warming-friendly legislation such as cap-and-trade still threatening us all, we should do our best to stay informed.

In my July 30th post, I reported on the May 2008 submission of a petition to Congress and the President by 31,000 scientists representing the Oregon Institute of Science & Medicine which debunked doomsday global warming scenarios and warned against shortsighted and ill-conceived legislative fixes.

Now these latest tidbits from the scientific community:

1. Canadian climatologist T. Ball warns that “if we are facing a [global climate] crisis at all, it is that we are preparing for warming when we should be preparing for cooling.”

2. Australian scientist Peter Harris asserts that “the Earth is nearing the end of the typical interglacial cycle and is due for a sudden cooling climate change.” He goes on to say that “based upon careful analysis we can say that there is a 94% probability of imminent global cooling and the beginning of the coming ice age.” He notes that climate is currently unstable and that “most of the natural climate processes we are witnessing now are interdependent and occur at the end of each interglacial period, ultimately causing sudden drought.”

3, Noting that over the last 500,000 years there is a 100% [--that's 100%--] correlation between gravitational cycles to the beginning and ending of global warming cycles, in his book, Global Warming-Global Cooling, Natural Causes Found, the culmination of 19 years of research, meteorologist D. Dilley writes that “by 2023 global climate termperatures will become similar to colder temperatures in the 1800’s.”

4. The Russian Academcy of Sciences warns that “Earth is now at the peak of one of its passing warm spells which started in the 17th century when there was no industrial influence on the climate and no such thing as the hothouse effect.” In a companion story, Oleg Sorokhtin of the Academy notes that “carbon dioxide is not to blame for global change,” and goes on to say that “solar activity is many times more powerful than the energy produced by the whole of humankind. Man’s influence on nature is a drop in the ocean.”

5. Victor Herrera, a Mexican geophysicist, reports that global warming prognostications “are incorrect because they are based solely on mathematical models and present results from scenarios that do not include solar activity.” He concludes that “in 2 years or so there will be the beginnings of a little ice age that will last 60-80 years” and that “the immediate consequences [of these changes] will be drought.”

6. UK astrophysicist P. Corbyn asserts that “there is no evidence that CO2 has ever driven or ever will drive world temperatures and climate change. Worrying about CO2 is irrelevant.”

7. A recent U.S. Senate committee report highlighted Russian physicists’ collective projection that “global temperatures will cool–not warm–within the next decade.”

So, despite the politicization of this subject and the beltway’s general acceptance of global warming as an incontrovertible fact of life, what is actually occurring in our global climate is still hotly contested among rank and file scientists. On such a weighty subject, it is well past time for an open and responsible scientific discussion of this subject at the national level.  A ”climate change commission” representing all scientific viewpoints and perspectives should be convened and tasked with developing a coherent body of data and recommendations for the consideration of both Congress and the President. Why? Because the current mixing of politics with science is both shortsighted and insane. The damage caused by misguided legislative action could be incalculable.

Does Bishop Clark Know What’s Going On At Our Lady Mercy Church in Greece?

We received an e-mail about a political forum that RICHard Dollinger is having Tuesday night at our Lady of Mercy Church in Greece.  The writer asked a legitimate question — Why would Bishop Clark allow the church to host an event that will include numerous people who are openly hostile to the Catholic faith?

I decided to write an open letter to the Bishop.

Dear Bishop Clark:

It has recently been brought to our attention that Richard Dollinger will be using Our Lady of Mercy Church to host a forum for his political campaign.  Under normal circumstances, I would have no objection to this, but Dollinger’s campaign is anything but normal.

His campaign is based in using his opponant’s objection to abortion on demand as a central part of his campaign.  In fact he sent out a press release that said the following:

“My opponent, Joe Robach, stands firmly against women’s right to choose, and if it were dependent upon his misguided wisdom, women in New York State would be stripped of these rights,” continued Dollinger.

One of his main backers in his political campaign is the woman suing the town of Greece for inviting local clergy to say prayers at their meetings — in fact, she had a recent letter to the editor stating that “atheists are a fast growing community and “they are here to stay.” This woman and her friends from NOW disrupted a Woman’s Health Fair because of Dollinger’s opponants stand on abortion.

Another principle of his campaign is his unabashed support for gay marriage. In fact he said this to a gay newspaper:

“I come from a big Catholic family and I think the concept of couples who are committed to each other being able to have that commitment recognized is an important one,” Dollinger said. “How can anybody be against more families, more stable relationships, more stable family households? It’s both the logical thing to do and the right thing to do.”

I’m a believer in the seperation of church and state, but allowing Dollinger to use a Catholic church for his political campaign makes a mockery of the Catholic faith.  Please reconsider the decision to allow this event to take place at Our Lady of Mercy on Tuesday night.

Sincerely,

The Equalizer
