I can’t figure out Governor David Paterson.  First, he works to help liberal democrats take a majority in the state Senate.

Then he sounds the alarm that the state is in dire fiscal straights, then he sides with New York City Democrats in approving a budget that increases state spending by 9%.

Immediately  after that, he starts talking about the state’s pending budget deficit and how there is a need to make mid-year cuts to health care and education.  He has no takers in the new Senate majority on his plan to make mid year budget cuts, then he says this:

ALBANY – New York could face more red ink in March even if state leaders manage to close the current $3.2-billion budget deficit, Gov. David A. Paterson warned Saturday.

After speaking privately with Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli and experts on the 1970s financial crisis, Paterson announced there might not be enough cash to pay bills of $13 billion to $14 billion due at the end of the fiscal year on March 31. “We are in dire circumstances. . . . I need them to make [spending] cuts,” he said, referring to lawmakers.

Your guys are unwilling to make difficult choices now, so you go ahead and announce that even if they join you in undoing what they did as a part of this year’s irresponsible budget, they will still have to make extremely difficult choices in a few months?

Any bets on how successful they are in dealing with the deficits?
