As government encroachment gains momentum and you and I watch our liberties and money go out the window I believe a moment of thoughtful insight into what our nation once was and what it could once again be is appropriate.
We were…founded as a Democratic Republic, a representational form of democracy.
We were… founded on the notion of Negative Liberty i.e. my rights are inherently mine as yours are yours.
We were…founded by classical liberals; this was the political philosophy of Thomas Jefferson and the signers of the Declaration of Independence this philosophy permeates the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers and many other documents produced by the people who created the American system of government.
We have lost our bearing and direction. We need guidance directly from the sources and we need men and women willing to stand up and fight the monster called “Big Government” in all areas of our lives.
George Bush and his Republican Party spent alot of our money, now Obama and the Democratic congress is spending and planning to spend more than the previous spend-happy majority party spent.
According to the Heritage Foundation:
- Bush expanded the federal budget by a historic $700 billion through 2008. Obama’s proposed 2010 budget would add an additional $1 trillion
- Bush created a Medicare drug entitlement that will cost an estimated $800 billion in its first decade. Obama seeks a $634 billion down payment on a complete government takeover of health care
- Bush increased federal education outlays 58 percent faster than inflation. Obama would double total education spending
- Bush became the first president to spend 3 percent of gross domestic product on federal anti-poverty programs. Obama is increasing this spending by 20 percent
- Bush presided over a $2.5 trillion increase in the public debt through 2008. Not counting 2009, which the two presidents share with an additional $2.6 trillion in public debt, Obama’s budget would add $4.9 trillion in public debt from the beginning of 2010 through 2016
Lesson: Republicans and Democrats are ruining our nation, they neither care for nor uphold the vision of the founders for this land, their political organizations and the majority of their candidates seek only to win and hold power at all costs.
A more libertarian society would mean a nation and government that promotes…
* The most personal/individual freedom
* The most respect for civil liberties
* The most limited government
* The most respect for its constitution
* The most economic freedom
* The lowest taxes
* Sound money
Our hope lies not in political parties but in the people, and in leaders who will stand up for these values and promise once elected to bring to pass a society that looks more like the above mentioned nation…some of those who have a proven record in this are.
Gary Johnson – Former Gov. New Mexico
Ron Paul – Congressman Texas
Mark Sanford – S.C. Gov. mistresses aside he’s still a liberty minded politician
Brian Schweitzer – Montana Gov. aside from his terribly partisan DNC speech in 2008 (go figure) he is pro-gun, anti-tax, and wants to repeal the patriot act
There are others I am sure, but these stick out in my mind. There are also great organizations out there like the Democratic Freedom Caucus and Republican Liberty Caucus that are working within the two dominant political tragedies to make a change (real change) for the good. So my fellow “monroerisers” let’s keep our heads up and let’s not be downcast – there is still hope, real hope…in you and me and those we choose to lead us in the future.
For a more libertarian society indeed.
