I was a little taken back from an e-mail I found in my inbox this morning. The Northgate Neighborhood Association held their candidate’s night last night. A controversy erupted when a woman expressed concern over the use of the term “wetback” at a Maloney campaign “meet and greet” in a local saloon (seems like Dan spends a lot of time at the local watering holes).
From the e-mail:
A woman expressed concern that she heard someone talk about losing all of these jobs to “wetbacks” at a Maloney event in a bar on Tuesday night. She thought it was Maloney, a charge he denied. One of Maloney’s supporters claimed she made the remark.
The woman challenged that explanation and Maloney called her a liar! The crowd groaned their displeasure and several of the thugs associated with Maloney made the woman feel uncomfortable and tried to intimidate her with stares and dirty looks.
Calling Mexican Americans wetbacks! Even if it wasn’t Maloney using these offensive terms, he needs to be held accountable for what happens at his campaign event (that’s the case he has made on many occasions).
He needs to come clean on this — find out who said this and reprimand them for using terms that demean others — there’s no place in Monroe County politics for intolerance like this!
