John Maurer is the Republican candidate taking on Democrat Paul Haney for the the 23rd District in the Monroe County Legislature. Haney is the incumbent who was the former Finance Director under Democrat County Executive “Taxin” Tom Frey. Haney is also the Vice Chairman of the Issues Committee for the Monroe County Democrat Party.
Paul Haney is also the guy who covered up a $42 million county deficit for his boss, Tom Frey, saddling county taxpayers and the new Republican County Executive with the debt. We really don’t hear too much about that from our local media. The D&C Editorial Board praised Haney’s experience. Apparently they think cooking the books for Frey was a good thing:
But Haney, a retired certified public accountant, has distinguished himself in government finance over four decades in public service.
You bet he “distinguished himself” – as a corrupt government employee who would do anything to protect his boss. Between 1990 and 1992, Haney also used his outstanding finance abilities to help secure a 22% tax increase for Monroe County residents. What a great guy!
Here’s Maurer’s response to Haney’s endorsement which was printed in today’s Democrat & Chronicle.
Vote Maurer for sensible solutions
The Editorial Board endorsed Paul Haney based on his “experience in government finance.” As county finance director, he left a $42 million deficit which he covered up with “accounting tricks” (Democrat and Chronicle, 1992) and supported 22 percent increases in property taxes between 1990 and 1992.
As county legislator, he voted against the Taxpayer Protection Act and the Medicaid Intercept Program ($19 million savings).
During the endorsement interview, Haney criticized the budget deficit, but could not articulate a plan for closing it, leaving the alternative of raising taxes. He thinks taxes should be higher as demonstrated by his criticism of the county executive cutting taxes (City Newspaper, 2005).
We need someone in government like myself with private sector financial experience as confirmed by my endorsement by the Rochester Business Alliance and Greater Rochester Association of Realtors.
Please give me a chance to deliver on my nonpartisan strategy for turning around Rochester!

—JONATHAN MAURER
ROCHESTER
Maurer is a candidate for Monroe County Legislature, 23rd District.
Now keep in mind that the Democrat & Chronicle has claimed that new blood needs to be instilled in the County Legislature. They also claim anyone involved with “corruption” should be removed from office. Paul Haney has been in government for 40 years and was involved in corruption that put the county in a $42 million deficit.
Explain to me again why the D&C endorsed him?
Jonathan Maurer deserves to be elected to the County Legislature and clearly should have been endorsed by the D&C.
It’s unfortunate that a young, experienced, capable fresh face fell victim to the bias over at the D&C.
Good luck Jon, I’m pullin’ for ya!
