SUBJECT: Picking Candidates
I can only imagine how you folks feel. Jon Powers spent over a year running for office, raised over a million dollars, had the support of all of the “progressive” bloggers and lost to a lady none of you know.
As a public service, I’m going to offer some free advice. More detailed analysis and other services are available for a fee.
As most of us in the business world know, sometimes job applicants exaggerate their background and qualifications. We undertake a process called “vetting” where we actually check up on people’s claims before we hire them — or in your case back their candidacy for public office.
At the risk of sounding egotistical, I think I was the first person to question Jon Powers’ claims on War Kids Relief — the activity he used to “credential” himself as a congressional candidate. Using a technique called a “google search” I looked in to War Kids Relief and all I found was pr info on what a great guy Jon Powers was. I reported on this on April 13, 2008:
…all I found was references to how it was created by Jon Powers. Stuff put out by his campaign. I went to youtube and again, the only reference to War Kids Relief was in the context of Jon Powers creating it — again stuff put out by his campaign.
I found all of the following links by doing a Google search on War Kids Relief. The only problem is that none of them work:
Then you are all aware of Jon not having a job, hence the need to attempt to violate FEC regulations to keep a roof over his head. After reading these reports, one question appeared obvious to me. If he viewed his campaign as his personal expense account, could it be he gained financially from War Kids Relief?
I posted on this on April 19, 2008:
“This campaign is going to be a case study on whether or not Mr. Smith can still get to Washington,” Gerken said.
He said the payment will show up in Powers’ June election report.
Gerken said Powers is traveling today and unavailable for comment.
Three things jump out at me. First, in Mr. Smith goes to Washington, I’m pretty sure Mr. Smith had a job and didn’t try to get others to pay his mortgage.
Second, Powers was traveling and unavailable for comment — I’d like to know where he was and why his cell phone (probably paid for by his campaign) didn’t work there.
And finally, did he ever draw a salary from that charity he set up — War Kids Relief. If he thinks his campaign account can be used to pay his mortgage — why not dip into the “charity” for personal expenses? If he was a substitute teacher, what kind of savings is he living off of? I don’t think the Army pays enough to accumulate savings so you can be a full time candidate for congress for over a year. Take a look at our previous post on his “charity”.
One final thing. Take a look at Rochesterturning.com’s post on this. Would it be the same if Randy Kuhl did something like this? They are outrageous.
Come on Jon! Come clean on this “charity” and explain your role in it and why it doesn’t appear to be in existence anymore. It’s starting to look like this was nothing more than a ploy to show your compassion when you decided to try and be a full time politician.
There were other things that should have set off bells and whistles like Jon’s reluctance to take a stand on core issues. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but something really sounded odd, almost hypocritical, to me when he said gay marriage was an issue for states to deal with.
Then he gave people the impression he was pro-life. Then he said he was pro-choice. He also stumbled and bumbled on where he stood on many other issues. The he also appeared to have little knowledge about local projects and issues.
And all of that out of district money. Over $1.1 million raised from Washington insiders and the Hollywood elite. Then hiring John Gerkin, Jack Davis’ old campaign manager. Gerkin appeared to be little more than a hired gun who would say anything for a paycheck.
In closing, your problems were compounded by your previous endorsement of Davis in the previous two elections. When you allow someone to run because they are self funded (crazy old guys running out of spite in particular)– and then take large sums of money from him during the election cycle leading up to this one — trying to bone him because you have a better candidate can be problematic. Davis getting pissed off and running a negative campaign against Powers is something that should have been factored into the equation.
In the end, you might have actually ended up with a better candidate in the general election. Our money is still on Chris Lee, but Alice Kryzan will be a formidable candidate.

Powers War Kid’s Relief effort was an honest attempt to make a difference in this world.
Do not slander his efforts as a resume stuffer. It shows your ignorance.
Krzyan pretended to be above attacks yet consistanly went after Powers for the War Kids, his teaching degree, and everything positive - typical political scumbag move. Take your opponents top positives and attack, attack, attack.
Kryzan deserves to lose miserably, and she will.
If War Kids Relief was an honest attempt by Powers, it was the lamest most futile attempt ever, and exposes his ineptitude. If that was an honest attempt at helping kids in Iraq, thank God this guy didn’t get through the primary and have the opportunity to make an honest attempt at being our Congressman.
Hank - you are a pathetic excuse for a human. You have fallen into the “Davis trap” and have let a crazy old man with $ 1.3 million to spend on a primary and slander the best candidate because of a grudge.
Sadly your uneducated vote counts just the same as everyone else.
Will Lee or Kryzan support these types of programs to help keep children in war tarn countries out of the recruiting grasps of terrorists?
You can attack all you want - but it shows you know nothing on the policies of you support
Sad. Good luck being an ignorant human person.
Last I checked, Alice Kryzan was a pretty liberal Democrat. So I fail to see your point, really.
The voters chose. Thus it was always to be.
buffpun:
The point is Kryzan is a grown up. She has a history and background. Probably hasn’t grossly embelished her resume — probably hasn’t sworn at a police officer, and doesn’t (as of yet anyways) owe her soul to outside special interests.
Kryzan owes her soul to all the companies she represented AGAINST the environment she has sworn to protect.
She’s taken PAC money in this race already. She begged for the same endorsements that Powers got - and lost them (UAW, NYSUT, etc).
Lee has PAC money - are you against Lee?
JS
Great point, not many people know that Kryzan defending Occidental Chemical in litigation involving Love Canal. I dont care how young she was or that she had a change of heart. As an intelligent person she had to know the terrible things Occidental did.
I find self-funded campaigns quite disgusting, thanks in great part to Jack Davis.
The congress should not be a home for bored millionaires or billionaires. It should be for average citizens to go and make a difference.
That’s what Jon Powers was - a regular guy who wanted to go to Washington and change things he thought were broken. It’s very difficult to raise the money to go to Congress, especially when all your opponents are millionaires who have practically unlimited funding.
Only a putz would criticize War Kids, and the ticket for “swearing at a cop” was just that - a ticket and inconsequential.
If it comes out that Chris Lee was convicted of something not V&TL-related, will you vilify him as you have Powers? Because the scuttlebutt is that Lee has not one, but two such convictions.
It’s also ironic that Kryzan slammed Powers for accepting endorsements from the national party and called him someone “stuck to the establishment” for it… then just yesterday accepted the Red to Blue program.
This was the SAME program she attacked Powers for accepting and being a part of.
She is a hypocritical bitch.
Vote Working Family Party in November!!
Buffalopundit, only a putz would have promised poor children that he would deliver something that he could not. Powers’ falure didn’t warrant his over publizising of WKR, taking one red cent from it and pretending that it still was doing anything worthwhile.
Heck, if that’s the case, anyone can “claim” they did something worthy and then use it to run for office.
Powers made this whole thing an issue when he and his followers kept praising him for it.
Hmmm… “I made all these promises that I couldn’t keep, and then just blamed someone else when I couldn’t get it done.”
Doesn’t sound like a guy who wants to change things and make them better. Sounds like the same old political, rhetorical bs.
Apparently Democratic voters didn’t buy it either. Good for them.
PS - The answer is - Poor Judgement.
The Question - What is motherf*cking a police officer?
limpy-
people like you are why politics is so dirty and full of lies. Powers never “mh$&*f*$#” a cop - there’s even witnesses to attest to that but according to Bob McCarthy’s news article he didn’t care about the truth.
WKR did a lot to bring national attention to the huge problem we have - and still have - with children in Iraq who are out of work, out of school, and getting paid to KILL US soldiers.
I’m sorry you don’t care about more soldiers dying, but would rather “mother f*ck” a good guy who ran for office.
Do you limp support Alice? or are you going to attack her for Lee to win?
If so - what are Lee’s qualifications for Congress?
He lived on a beach in California surfing until mommy and daddy gave him a job and sold the company.
Sorry BuffaloPundit, Millionaires and Billionaires are Americans and have every right to run for office. The system takes care of them if they have bad message or bad attitude though doesn’t it?
Vic - you are right- millionaires are people….
but why does their wealth make them more qualified for office or easier for them to run for office.
Would you support a bill to limit spending in races?
Jackson,
The only qualification is you must be 25 years old and live in the state you are running in. You don’t even have to live in the district, ever see a district map for Louise Slaughters district? Its a tiny sliver of a road leading to her house. She owns a big house (and is very wealthy herself BTW) and the district she represents make on average about 1/6th of what she makes and probably has 1/100 of the accumulated wealth.
I know its hard to accept for a lot of liberals, but there is no shame in having money. Most people desire it.
The point is its your message and your actions that will help you win. Look at Jack Davis and Tom Golisano. They spent tons of Money. Davis after three tries and millions of his own money he couldn’t do it. In 2006 he ran against Tom Reynolds with all of Reynolds problems, and Davis up 25 points in the polls on October 1st Davis still managed to lose.
Golisano spent 60 million trying to become governor and finished a very poor third. He is now being manipulated by Steve Pidgeon and his flunkies lost bad in the primaries. I hope anyone who takes Golisanos money loses.
jackie, oh ya, that’s right, jon jon said he didn’t say that. He even wrote it down.
Well, heck, it must be true then!
And his buddies will confirm it for him.
Eureka!!!
Cut the “you don’t care about soldiers dying” whiny spin crap. Your boy lost because he screwed up (many times) and now all his fake political friends are bailing on him like he bailed on the children in Iraq with his fake charity.
I don’t need to support Alice. It looks like everyone else in the Dem political machine already is. Well, at least the Working Families Party is still with him. They are true to their word and will stick with Powers until the end. Loyalty like no other. When the WFP says they’re with you, they’re with you through the tough times too. It’ll beJon Jon, jackie and the WFP. One big happy family!
Jon Powers is a bad, bad person and you know it. Stop lying that he’s not.
