Monroerising.com’s feelings about the Democrat and Chronicle’s editorial board are well documented, but now we feel the need to speak out on a dumb editorial in this week’s Messenger Post. They are advising Governor Paterson to veto Senator Jim Alesi’s bill prohibiting “big oil” from zone pricing.
From the editorial:
One local lawmaker, state Sen. James Alesi, a Perinton Republican, was behind a bill that would ban the practice in New York. Sounds good in theory but, as with many bills and laws that come out of Albany, it is yet another attempt to legislate an issue that could be addressed via the free market. (And if there’s one thing we always thought Republicans supported, it’s a free market.)
Set aside the difficulty of proving zone pricing was in effect (not to mention who would be charged with such a duty), the fact is, savvy motorists can and should be avoiding stations where gas is overpriced in favor of those offering better deals. We’re not suggesting everyone get in their car and form a convoy to Henrietta, but we all know there are stations in our area where prices are generally lower, and stations where they are not.
Maybe I don’t make as much as the bigwigs over at Messenger Post, but I think Jim Alesi’s bill is just what we need. Why should people in Henrietta pay less than people in Pittsford?
Alesi is right on with this and we hope the Governor signs this bill asap!
