U.S. hands over Anbar, Iraq’s once-deadliest region
Americans have handed over Anbar Province to Iraqi security forces. Two years ago, Anbar Province was the most lethal place for American forces in Iraq. A U.S. marine or soldier died in the province nearly every day, and the provincial capital. Islamic extremists controlled large pieces of territory. The war in Iraq looked like a failure because of Anbar Province
“Not in our wildest dreams could we have imagined this,” said Mowaffak al-Rubaie, the Iraqi national security adviser, who flew in from Baghdad. “Two or three years ago, had we suggested that the Iraqis could take responsibility, we would have been ridiculed, we would have been laughed at. This was the cradle of the Sunni insurgency.”
The turning over of this province makes it 11 out of 18 provinces. Credit for this achievment goes to The brave soldiers, General David Petraus and those with the courage and vision to support the surge when many politicians were advising cut and run.

Are you sure about that Tiberius? I didn’t see anything in the NY Times about it? Oh wait there it is in section c page 18 right after the movie reviews
There is also another piece of news that has gone unreported.
Former Marine Sgt. Jose Luis Nazario Jr. was found not guilty of War crimes.
Actually Vic, Dexter Filkins of the New York Times Magazine wrote an excellent article on Anbar. I don’t know where it was placed, whether it received front page status or not. Filkins is probably the best war correspondent there is today.
You can read Filkins articles at his Time Topics section of the website.
