Media Hound Jerry Brown To Go After Media Hound Chuck Schumer?

We first reported on NY Senator Chuck Schumer’s role in the IndyMac Bank collapse in July. Now there are reports that California AG Jerry Brown, is considering a probe of Schumer’s role in the collapse. This would be a clash of media seeking titans.

According to news reports:

At issue is a much-publicized letter that Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, sent in June to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) and Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) questioning the company’s ability to survive.

The FDIC took control of IndyMac on July 11 after depositors withdrew more than $1.3 billion over 11 days. It was the third-largest bank failure in U.S. history. At the time, OTS Director John Reich blamed Schumer’s letter for causing the run on the bank.

In a letter to Attorney General Jerry Brown last week, 51 former IndyMac workers wrote: “From the day (Schumer’s) letter was made public on June 26 until the closure of the bank, a run on the bank took place and the failure became inevitable.”

Brown’s spokeswoman Christine Gasparac said on Wednesday that his office was reviewing the letter and that a decision on whether to act on it could be made as early as next week.

Just a hunch, but I don’t think there is any way Jerry Brown passes on this — imagine the media attention he would get by going after Senator Schumer. Chuckie might have other things to worry about besides his time table on RenSquare.

  1. I still don’t get this. Who’s at fault here? Is is Schumer, for having an opinion about it, or the person that “leaked” the document. Why not go after the reporter that broke the story too… They did it with the Plame story, so why not here?

  2. Woody,

Schumer had knowledge that was not suppose to be public and he made it public thats whats at issue here. The controller of the currency called Schumer incredibly irresponsible. That warrants investigation. The people at the bank made a complaint to the California AG and the AG now needs to make a decision. Cincinnatus has a point one person that is more in love with a camera than Schumer is Jerry Brown. It will be interesting to see what happens.

As you often say, “You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts” Judith Miller the NY Times reporter in the Plame case was jailed because she was subpoenaed and asked who was her source in the illegally leaked info. She refused to name her source which the Judge ordered her to do. It was not because she published the info. She was charged with contempt, not illegally publishing. In this case we know who the leaker was, its Schumer.

–as a side note in the Plame case it was sad that Judith Miller went to jail. Libby Rove and Bush were skewered, but the person who leaked, Democrat Richard Armitage, Plame or Wilson who did this whole thing for political reasons never had any repercussions.
