2008 Summer Olympics Update
Friends, because the Monroe Rising hasn’t had a chance to post a story yet on the ongoing Olympics in Beijing, I figured this would the be the perfect opportunity to do an update on the games so far.
Here is an up to date Olympic Medal Count, which shows that the USA has a 22-20 medal lead over China but is 5 gold medals behind the host nation. In the four days of events, many tremendous things have occurred; both causes to celebrate and to mourn.
My favorite moment during this years was something that occurred last night. After the withdrawal of the Hamm brothers, the United States Men’s Gymnastics team was supposed to struggle to even compete with the other nations in the competition. However, because they believed in themselves, with two events remaining they were in first place over defending gold medalist Japan and the favored China. While watching the 3 Americans compete on the high bar, I was amazed by the skill and strength that these young men exhibited while under the brightest of lights the world could imagine. Sure, the Chinese and Japanese overtook them for Gold and Silver respectfully, the Americans still took Bronze. Some liberals who believe that our nation is going to hell in a hand-basket may not respect this, but I’m damn proud of these men. They worked so hard, and overcame the loss of their two best gymnasts and push the best two teams in the nation to the brink. I say job well done.
If anyone has a memory from this or any other Olympics, please share it with us.

Nice post Lemon. It looks like we’re doing really well in swimming also. Tonight, our female gymnists are kicking behind right now.
I’m really proud of our American Olympians and our country.
Our athletes are representing our country with honor and pride and are working very hard to bring home the gold.
Go U.S.A.!!!
I agree with Mr. Peabody. The girls did great last night winning the silver. I wish they could have taken the gold over China though as I am not a fan of how they treat their athletes and hate to see their methods vindicated.
At the same time at least our girls can move on after not finishing first- if the Chinese girls had not taken home the gold they would have been ridiculed for the rest of their lives.
That is the difference between the US and China in a nutshell.
I hear you Hank. Some go even further. Look at what Sadam Husein’s son’s did to Iraqi soccer players for loosing games.
And I’ve personally heard one liberal refer to Iraq as a democracy under Sadam.
I’d still rather live here in the good ‘ol USofA!
