Democrat Politicians not paying gas tax at DNC convention in Denver.

Democrats in Congress did not act on Sen. John McCain’s proposal for a summer gas tax holiday, however that hasn’t stopped the Democratic National Convention from getting tax-free gas courtesy of the citizens of Denver, reports the Denver Post

Since March, staffers working on the Democratic National Convention have been using the city of Denver’s Municipal (for police and fire use) tax-free gas pumps to fill up their cars - and using its car washes.

Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz reacted sharply.

She said she didn’t think it was fair that local host-committee employees, as well as those with the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) who use those cars, are driving around on tax-free fuel.

“It didn’t sit well,” she said. “I pay taxes on my fuel when I fill up my own car.”

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper told council members that Minneapolis had a similar deal with the Republicans.

That isn’t true, said Teresa McFarland, spokeswoman for the local host committee for the Republican National Convention.

“We pay for fuel like everyone else does,” she said.

Later in the day, the camp of GOP presidential hopeful John McCain issued a statement saying that Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, was “for a gas-tax holiday — as long as it benefits him and his political party.”

It is against the Colorado Department of Revenue’s rules for any nonprofit, private business or government contractor to receive tax-free fuel, which is reserved for local and state governments.

These are the same people who said a gas tax holiday for the summer would not help the little people.

Can you see Nancy Pelosi saying “Let them eat cake”?

  1. Couldn’t they just drive with Charlie Wrangle and Greg Meeks? They have huge cars at taxpayers expense with free gas. (at least free to them, you pay the cost). Charlie has a Cadillac and Greg has an LS460 both very large cars capable of putting many people in, and they get almost 14mpg highway. (10 city)

  2. Soooo, the democrats do it, get caught and then go “well the republicans are doing it tooooo!”

But that appears to be a lie.

    Dems do it = ok

Reps do it = not ok

Dems lying about Reps doing it = typical

I’m waiting for jackie to use his typical “straw man” argument of “So you mean to tell me that republicans have never wanted to get free gasoline? That’s what makes it ok for the Dems to do it and its ok for them to lie because you mean to tell me that someone who is, was or might be a registered republican has never told a lie before? I hope you never need the services of a person who saves people’s lives! That’s why you people who probably never did a good thing for anyone every in your life, even though I have no idea what I’m talking about, need to pay for me and all my liberal radical friends so we don’t have to work!”

    Want some cheese?

  3. If that’s the whole truth I don’t think it’s ok for them (Dem’s) to do it. Although if Dems & Reps are “paying” for their own gas but expensing it, isn’t that just using our taxes to pay more taxes? Either way I agree there should be a set standard for both parties.

I don’t want to hear the b.s. about Dem’s driving big cars and Rep’s don’t though. There’s a lot of politicians - Dem’s & Rep’s alike driving huge gas gusslers and some of them are foreign to boot.

Congressmen/women should be required to drive American made cars the obtain a certain gas mileage if they want to expense the cars to the tax payers.(understandably people in Minnesota, Colorado, etc. might say they have to have 4 wheel drive in winter time but there are SUV’s that get upwards of 30 mpg.)

  4. Well what do you know? We found something that we can all agree on.

JS this post was about the upcoming conventions and how the dems are getting their campaign gas for free. The issue of official cars was one that we had some fun with a while back. Personally I think they should drive whatever they want. In the case of the office cars they have an office budget, they can use that budget any way they see fit. If Charlie Wrangle needs a Cadillac to do business with that’s fine with me, same thing goes for Greg Meeks. He was elected to office and he should use his judgment as to what his needs are to serve his constituents. If its poor judgment they will vote him out.

The issue was, the egregious violators were all democrats. Most democrats were wise enough not to drive around in Lexus 460’s.

The hypocrisy was that the democrats did have a bill in congress that pretty much said what you think. When they realized that it was their members that were violating it the bill was pulled. A few good reporters did some investigation and the fun started.
