MR Rant: Are There Any Other Fair Reporters Out There Besides Joseph Spector?
Monroerising has already reported on Democrat Rep. Charlie Rangel personally benefiting from 4 rent stabilized Manhattan apartments, one of which he’s using as a political campaign office. Joseph Spector had an excellent blog article covering a request to have Jon Powers return the $9000 in political campaign contributions he received from Rangel. Spector must be controlling his own posts because we don’t think the D&C higher-ups would allow this otherwise.
Ties To Rangel Under Fire
Republicans are wasting no time trying to tie any Democrat to Rep. Charlie Rangel, who is under fire after a New York Times article says he has four — yes, four — rent-stabilized apartments in upper Manhattan, including a campaign office.
Erie County Republican Chairman James Domagalski called on Congressional candidate Jon Powers to show “leadership by example” and return Rangel’s $9,000 in campaign contributions.
“At a time when many Western New York families are being hit by the housing crisis Jon Powers is taking campaign contributions from a senior Democrat congressman who now appears to have taken sweetheart real estate deals,” said Domagalski. “Jon Powers should cancel his upcoming fundraiser with Rangel and return his campaign contributions.”
Powers campaign had no immediate response.
Powers is running for the Democratic nomination for the 26th Congressional District, which runs from the Buffalo suburbs to the Rochester suburbs.

Now Maffei, Massa Gets Knocked For Rangel Ties
Republicans tying Rep. Charlie Rangel to every Democratic congressional candidate is continuing.
The National Republican Congressional Committee knocked Democratic candidate Dan Maffei, who is a former aide to Rangel, and Steuben GOP Chairman Bill Hatch called on Democratic candidate Eric Massa to refuse any campaign contributions from Rangel.
Rangel earlier this week announced a campaign fund to help Democratic congressional candidates across the country, including Maffei and Massa. He’s having a fundraiser at the Tavern on the Green for the committee.
“After working for him for many years, and traveling with him all across the world, Maffei and Rangel seem to be two peas in a pod,” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain.
“Attending lavish parties with his ethically-tainted mentor Charlie Rangel hardly shows that Dan Maffei is willing to deliver the kind of change that voters in New York are looking for,” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain.
Hatch said “we call on Mr. Massa to withdraw from Congressman Rangelâ€TMs fundraiser and return any contributions from the Congressman and his supporters. Itâ€TMs the correct and ethical thing to do.”

If it weren’t for Joseph Spector, we’d never read about this in our local McPaper. When it was announced that Spector was leaving, I feared the worse. The D&C finally gets someone with talent who reports issues good and bad for both sides fairly and they ship him off to Albany to become tainted by Gannet’s favorite grumpy reporter Jay Gallagher. Jay is fair about one thing, being completely miserable.
But Spector seems to be doing just fine in Albany. He’s still calling them like he sees ‘em and reports favorable and not so for both parties. Something the vast majority of our news media absolutely despises in a reporter.
So, anyway, Joseph Spector, this MR Rant’s for you!

To answer the question posed in the title of this post: In the broadcast media, yes, in the print media, no, except for one, and if we outed him/her, he/she would lose his/her job for not being partisan enough..
But we are hopeful that change MIGHT occur.
