Henrietta Supervisor Yudelson Makes Rookie Mistake
Gentle Reader:
Are the handicap the only protected class that people still feel free to discriminate against? I can’t help but comment on Henrietta Supervisor Michael Yudelson’s thoughts about a group home being established for hearing impaired individuals with mild delvelopmental disabilities that appeared in today’s Democrat and Chronicle.
He said the majority of residents are concerned about added traffic and on-street parking that could come with the home. The property is located on a curve that’s often misjudged by drivers, residents said at a meeting in May.
“It’s not anything against CDS or group homes. Some people that spoke that night said they wouldn’t mind having it on their street, just not on that curve,” Yudelson said. “We are trying to strike a balance of providing for group homes in town but also representing the residents most affected by that.”
Yes, of course, they aren’t against a home in their neighborhood — they just don’t want it on “that curve.” And Yudelson is trying to strike a balance between the group home and residents in that neighborhood. That’s why he is trying to chase the CDS home to another neighborhood.
Henrietta offered another location (Pinnacle Road) that had been sold. Yudelson said the town would look at other possible locations.
What do you think the neighbors in the other neighborhood will say? I’m sure they too will have nothing against “these people” but none the less there will be something so wrong with their neighborhood that it will not be appropriate for them.
Perhaps it will be a corner lot. Maybe it will be at the entrance of the sub-division. Maybe there will be an in-ground pool across the street and 5 houses down.
Mr. Izguhde and I lived two houses down from a group home at our old place in Penfield. No problems — the people came and went — just like our neighbors at the new place. Actually, we didn’t have to worry about beer parties when the parents are out of town like we do know.
I realize fear makes people say and do stupid things. Supervisor Yudelson and the Henrietta town board should show leadership on this and let the CDS home go in as planned.

We live right down the street from a group home for developmental disabled people. They are kind and very good neighbors. They keep the property very clean and in good condition they are quiet and respectful. I could not ask for better neighbors. Like Prudence says there are no wild parties. These people are citizens and have rights as well.
