Dave Garretson: Is He Really The Answer?
Friends, I opened up the newspaper yesterday fully intending to read some news (as heavily biased as it is). However, an article in the local section surprised me. I had known about the Greece businessman who is running for State Assembly in the 134th District. Dave Garretson is the Democrat who will be running against incumbent Republican Bill Reilich.
Since the D&C is a little behind the ball in reporting on news when it occurs, I happened to see that Mr. Garretson had given an interview with one of the local Democrat/Liberal/Progressive blogs last week. I found it odd that a businessman was formally announcing his election bid in such a venue when he should know the 134th is a district that is be anything but supportive of the socialist way of life the liberal community espouses. The residents in the 134th are hard working, blue collar types who aren’t really focused on the uber liberal issues.
He states in his interview that if elected he would make “reforms that we need and the higher level of honest and ethical behavior we need in government” and that he’s not a “mindless partisan.” What Dave doesn’t know is that the rest of the Democrats in the Assembly ARE mindless partisans and only care about New York City as is drilled into their brains by their leader, Sheldon Silver. So instead of the 134 AD having a voice of opposition to the New York City Machine that it currently has with Bill Reilich, it would instead have Mr. Garretson, who will be forced to fall lock step in line with the NYC boys and girls who only care about the 5 boroughs.
In the D&C, it states that he’s 55 years old and has never held an elected office. He expects to make change? He’ll be going up against lifelong politicians who will legislate circles around him. He’ll be in the majority but do you think “Slick” Joe Morelle and “the Godfather” David Gantt, and Susan “Jimmy Hoffa” John will allow him to have a strong, independent voice? The answer is no. They don’t allow anything that would ever take the spotlight off them. So not only will he be a backbencher within the Assembly, but he’ll be playing, at least, 4th banana to three area Democratic amigos. In the D&C he is quoted as saying, “I’ll be known as an open, regular guy who is elected as a Democrat but is not wearing a partisan hat.” Friends, WHO do you think he’ll be caucusing with? Partisan Democrats. And Friends, who do you think he will report to? *Hint* It’s not the people. That’s right, it’s New York City Democrats. I dare him to stand up right now and denounce the way Sheldon Silver rules the Assembly with his iron fist. I double-dog dare him. But he won’t.
Garretson’s campaign promises are to focus on Green-collar jobs, like former NY Governor DeWitt Clinton….who was Governor over 200 years ago. He wants to pass ethic reforms. How do you think the Democrats who have been the central figures caught up in ethics and rules violations will feel about that?
Finally, once again, I can’t believe the Monroe County Democratic Committee couldn’t find a qualified woman to run for this seat or any other for that matter. This once again shows that the party of progress sees no need to promote equality for the genders. As long as old white men are in office they’re fat, dumb and happy.

David Garretson would be the worst possible Assemblyman for our area. He doesn’t come across well at all and, I’m sorry, but he does not appear to be very intelligent and admits that he knows absolutely nothing about serving our area in state government.
This means he will be easy to manipulate by the Liberal NYC Democrats. We don’t need to further erode our voice in Albany by handing this seat over to the New York City Democrats by giving it to Garretson. The 134th will officialy have no one to speak out in favor of local employers, taxpayers and the average blue collar working man and woman in general. Voters cannot allow Sheldon Silver to take this seat too.
No freakin’ way!
Keep Bill Reilich!
Why would a rich socialist liberal think he could win in an average, middle class district? We don’t buy the slick, polished line of bulls*** those like Garretson shovel out. Why do the democrats keep treating us like we’re too stupid to know better? Sheldon Silver doesn’t need any more downstate liberal types. He has enough already.
