Another Democrat Joins Fray For Reynolds Seat — Bellavia Considering Run Against Slaughter

The Buffalo News, the paper of record for the race to succeed retiring Congressman Tom Reynolds, reports a new Democratic contender in the race for Reynolds seat. According to the News:

County Legislator Kathy Konst of Lancaster said Wednesday she expects to join the Democratic field to succeed Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds in Washington, setting up a suddenly crowded four-way contest.

Konst, serving her second term in County Hall, surprised just about everyone observing the 26th District race by joining it just before designating petitions begin circulating next week. But she is ready to commit at least $100,000 of family funds to the primary and thinks her independent reputation combined with governmental and business experience could prove a winning combination.

This is more bad news for Jon Powers.  So far Konst, who has yet to officially enter the race, has done the same amount of mail as Powers — none.  They are both behind Jack Davis by three mailings.  Yes that’s right, a reader has sent us a third piece from Davis that hit right before Memorial Day. (We will have the piece up soon — technical difficulties are being worked on so we can share it with you).

While Powers and his supporters were handing out Buffalo Bills schedules  (see the Athena Trojan’s comment) at usually somber Memorial Day parades across western New York State, people were reading about how Jack Davis is committed to an immediate withdrawl of troops from Iraq.  And Konst seems to be the credible female entry the Democrats have been lacking.

That same story reports that David Bellavia is considering a run against the oldest member of New York State Congressional delegation, Louise Slaughter — our very own version of Claude Pepper.  Again according to the News:

On the Republican side, former businessman Christopher J. Lee has been endorsed by party leaders, though another Iraq War veteran, David Bellavia, officially remains in the race. Talk continues among Republicans, however, of a possible Bellavia challenge to Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, D-Fairport.

As we’ve said before, add the Buffalo News to the list of papers you need to read to make up for the lack of reporting in our own local “news”paper.  The D&C’s news coverage really sucks – but boy, their social networking stuff rivals myspace and facebook!
