Is That Hasman or Hasbeen?

After last year’s debacle of not being able to find a candidate for County Executive, it’s nice to see Democratic Party Chairman Joe “The Cat Whisperer” Morelle put his nose to the grindstone and put a lot of work into finding a candidate for County Clerk.

Tom Hasman, an former Clinton intern, is the Democrats’ choice to run against Cheryl Dinolfo. According to the Democrat and Chronicle:

During Hasman’s announcement, held at Monroe County Democratic Committee headquarters, committee Chairman Joseph Morelle attacked Dinolfo’s practice of encouraging people to renew their vehicle registrations in person at the clerk’s office, so the county can retain the revenue, instead of renewing their registrations online or by mail, which can be more convenient but sends all of the revenue to Albany.

Huh?  I know Morelle put serving his political master Sheldon Silver ahead of doing what’s right for Rochester, but still, it’s surprising he would actually say that out loud.

Again, according to the D&C:

Hasman was born in Rochester, grew up in Webster and graduated from Bishop Kearney High School in 1991. He earned undergraduate degrees in political science and sociology from State University College at Oswego and a master of arts in government from Johns Hopkins University.

I guess they couldn’t find anyone smart enough to get into McQuaid or Aquinas to run.  And State University College at Oswego — I’ve heard you need a 98.6 to be accepted there (I’m talking about body temperature — not GPA).

One final point.  The D&C also said:

He is a sector leader for the Monroe County Democratic Committee and worked on Morelle’s campaign in 2006. He also worked in Democratic politics in Virginia.

That’s quite an impressive political resume.  Nice job on the candidate recruitment!

  1. Did Joe Morelle really say that? I do not know Cheryl Dinolfo, but she came and spoke to our Chamber of Commerce group and asked us as residents of Monroe County to help get income to the county. When she did this she never asked us to vote for her or anybody else, she never mentioned any political party. I thought that was an example of being a good public servant and representing the constituents that elected her.

I recently needed a passport and went to the clerks office instead of the post office.

  2. Is this the same Tom Has man that is with the Rochester Gay Mens Choir? It appears that his only experience with a political campaign was running for a board seat at the Rochester Gay Mens Choir. I can see how in the eyes of the cat whisperer that would make him qualified.

Is Tom in this picture? Is he one of the ‘Rochettes’?

I don’t thnk the fact that Mr. Hasman is gay matters. The issue I have with traditionally Gay Democrats is their agenda. It is often very left leaning. I believe in conservative principles and a conservative ideological governement. We have enough of an expanding high tax, redistribution philosophy now. We dont need to add that philosophy to the Clerks office. The Clerks office is one government entity that should work as a business and a small government. It is the business end of any municipality and not a legislative function in our governement.

  4. So Morelle and Hasman are going to fight to make sure our local dollars are sent to Albany so they can be redistributed to New York City instead of staying here in Rochester? Someone tell Mr. Hasman he’s not running for New York City Clerk.

Congratulations on your second term Ms. Dinolfo.

    Hey, thanks Tom!

  5. I would like to make a correction to my original comment. I should have said “it doesn’t matter whether Mr. Hasman is gay or not” I do not know his sexual orientation. I believe it is irrelevant.
