Democrat and Chronicle Has 1A Story On Chili Supervisor David Dunning Becoming A Republican
Oops — I spoke to soon. Just yesterday, I congratulated the Democrat and Chronicle for going three days without an editorial blasting Chili Supervisor David Dunning’s party switch from Democrat to Republican. But, today’s edition had a front page story on how mad the Democrats were over Dunning (who was never an active Democrat Committee member) switching and becoming a Republican.
They are trying to milk this for all they can — perhaps trying to fill the void in the news since the Monroe County Public Defender fiasco created by Assemblyman David Gantt.
Democratic Party Chairman Joe Morelle, himself a paragon of virtue, said this:
This is a betrayal, because the people in Chili who supported Dunning did so in the belief that he was a Democrat and would continue to be one, so this is hard to digest,” said Morelle.
The article went on to point out that:
The Chili Democratic Committee contributed $671 during the election to Dunning’s campaign, according to state financial disclosure reports. That donation last year represented the largest individual contribution disclosed, but only a fraction of the $8,047 raised.
Now I see why the Democrats are so mad — after all they “invested” $671 to help get Dunning elected. I don’t know much about political campaigning, but $671 — that’s laughable. Especially in the context that Democrats spend hundreds of thousands of dollars during the 2007 election cycle.
No wonder Dunning doesn’t feel an overwhelming sense of duty sticking with these people. They didn’t do much for him. When he got to know the the Republicans on the town board he found out they weren’t bad people. He figured he could better serve Chili by working with them, rather than try to set up the Democrats for a 2009 campaign.
Our good friend Philbrick over on Mustardstreet had a great post yesterday on this subject. He points out that in their endorsement of Dunning last year, they point out numerous personal attributes that would make him a good Supervisor. Nowhere is it mentioned that his running as a Democrat was a reason to vote for him.
I would think the D&C would be happy that an elected official was more interested in doing good for the community rather that serving their political masters. As we pointed out before, the D&C is run by liberal hypocrites — do you think their coverage would be so negative if a Republican became a Democrat?

Dunning was a not registered in any party until 2006 when he became a democrat — why would they be shocked? He used them and they used him — that’s politics.
