Politics Is Taking Over The Rehabilitation Of Our City Schools — What Is David Gantt Doing About It?

While trolling through the D&C editorial blogs recently in an effort to find some semblance of fair and balanced reporting from the powers that be over there, I actually happened upon an excellent post from Tom Tobin that blows the whistle on some political hanky panky going on with some appointments to a local board — and no, it’s not the Public Defender or the President of MCC.

It’s a board that is supposed to manage millions of dollars in state funding for improvements to deteriorating city schools.

Here’s Tobin’s post in its entirety:

The games being played over at MCC should stick in the collective craw, but there are political games being played as well over the naming of the special board required by law to oversee the huge school modernization project in the city. Mayor Duffy mentioned it yesterday during his visit to the Editorial Board, and said that he and school superintendent Brizard are close to making their appointments to the board.

It’s taken months to get this thing set up. Why? Because there’s a ton of money, perhaps as much as $1 billion in design, construction and other kinds of contracts at play here, and you can believe that the special interests want not only a place at the table but enough clout to have things their way. Much of this is going on behind the scenes but the political maneuvering, in style and intent, probably isn’t all that removed from what’s going on with the MCC search.

So where are David Gantt and his minions when we really need them to right this injustice to our poor city youth?  I would think David would be screaming his head off to make sure that our city kids aren’t facing irreversible harm as a result of this political gamesmanship.

It turns out that Gantt WAS involved.  We’re told that he wouldn’t let the legislation for this project pass unless the list of school buildings to be improved was REMOVED.  Now why would David Gantt want to do that?

Well, if you already know which schools are going to be improved, there’s no room to force those involved to barter with, and beg, David Gantt to please help fix their particular building.  Imagine the power!  We wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Gantt is directing traffic with these appointments and that he’s actually angling to get some of his own cronies on this board.

But that would would mean that David Gantt doesn’t really care about what’s best for our city children or the public as a whole.

This would absolutely destroy his credibility and call into question his motives for barging his way in on the Public Defender and MCC President selection.

Come to think of it, he’s kinda done that on his own already.

  1. If Tobin is talking about it it must be bad. Leave it to Gantt — he only crawls out from under the rock to fight Republicans
