How Do Those Poor Judges Do It — They Only Make $136,000 Per Year?
It looks like we are close to having a state budget. Another year gone by and no raise for New York State Judges. Poor SOB’s, they’re suppose to get by on $136,000 a year. Oh yea, then there is the pension — oh, and don’t forget the medical benefits — oh yea and the guaranteed employment for life, 14 years or 10 years depending on what office the hold. To most people I know, that’s like winning the lottery.
The State’ Chief Judge only makes $156,000 a year. She had this to say about that:
We will, if necessary, bring a lawsuit to resolve this crisis. It pains me beyond any words I can think of,” Kaye said. The last raise for state judges was in 1999.
“I don’t make nearly as much today as I made 25 years ago,” Kaye said. “I’m not looking for millions of dollars in compensation. I know where to go if I want to earn big bucks, but I don’t. I want to be a judge, I want to be in public service.
Her $156,000 salary is about the same as a first-year attorney gets after passing the bar exam.
It’s really not fair. We force these people to serve in these offices then don’t pay them enough. Ok, we don’t force them to we ask them to. Well no that’s not right either — no one asks them to do this.
We’ve all been there before — having a job that doesn’t compensate you the way you feel you should be. How many of us ever sued our bosses? Anyone who doesn’t make what they feel they’re entitled to should look for another job — not sue the taxpayers!
