McCain Rising

While Obama dances around the growing racial land mines, and Clinton ratchets up her seen and unseen efforts to paint him as unelectable, John McCain has been quietly rising in the polls. See this report at Real Clear Politics that shows him overtaking Obama in the wake of, well, let’s call it Wright-Gate. You’ll see there that a recent Rasmussen poll has McCain leading Obama by seven points among likely voters. Then there’s this one that shows his recent rise against Clinton. Note the Rasmussen poll that has him up 10 points among likely voters. I guess there’s nothing more presidential than staying out of the news.

Appellate Judges Overturn Supreme Court Ruling On County FAIR Plan

The D&C is reporting that the Appellate Division’s Fourth Department found in favor of the Monroe County School Board Association’s lawsuit it brought against the County’s FAIR Plan.  As you know, the intention of the FAIR Plan was to utilize collected sales tax revenues to pay for Monroe County’s increasing Medicaid costs prior to distributing the remaining funding the County shares with local school districts across Monroe County, except for the Rochester City School District, which would not have been impacted by the move.

The County chose this course of action to pay for mandated welfare costs instead of increasing property taxes on homeowners.  But the Rochester Democratic Assembly Delegation (David Gantt, Susan John, David Koon & Joe Morelle) made it clear they would not allow Monroe County to raise its sales tax a penny to pay these costs.  Their resistance was meant to force Monroe County to raise property taxes on us homeowners instead.

Well, if the local Assembly Dems and democrats in the County Legislature have their way, we property taxpayers will foot the bill for these increased welfare costs.  I don’t know about you, but as a member of middle class I just can’t take another hit.  At least with the sales tax I could control my purchases.  Will my school district retract their huge proposed tax increase now that they don’t need the money?  Doubt it.  They’ll find another reason to need it “for the kids.”

Monroe County says it will appeal.  I hope to God they do or New York is losing two more people who are among the decreasing number helping to foot the bill.

Ummm…don’t get too used to Governor Paterson

By all accounts, Governor Paterson is very bright, hard working individual who is well liked by folks on both sides of the aisle in the legislature.  Although liberal to the core, he seemed like a welcome change of pace from the sanctimonious and brash Client 9.  Unfortunately, he may not be governor for long.  Bear with me on this long post, but there’s a significant amount of potential wrongdoing to cover.  Moreover, much of it involves potentially felonious misuse of campaign funds.

As you recall, just hours after his inauguration, Governor Paterson and his wife held a press conference where they both admitted to marital infidelities during a “rough patch” in their marriage a few years ago.  Maybe politics makes me cynical, but when I heard that they had happily fessed up to marital infidelities, I wondered what sort of bad deeds were being covered up.  I have to give credit to the reporters covering the Albany scene - they refused to give the governor a free pass (like the national reporters give to Obama) and went digging on their own.

In just a few days, they’ve uncovered quite a bit about our governor and it does not look good.  First, the press reported that the Governor had an ongoing relationship with a woman named Lila Kirton, a state employee who now works for him (she worked in Client 9’s office, and with his resignation, now works for Governor Paterson).   That looks pretty seedy, but the Governor apologized, so let’s move on.  Except that we can’t move on because it turns out that Paterson’s campaign wrote Kirton a check for $500 in 2002 for “professional services.”  I am not an expert at campaign finance rules, but I’m pretty sure you are not permitted to use campaign contributions to pay your girlfriend for “professional services.”

Next, the New York Post reported that former Olympic medalist Diane Dixon had a ”close personal relationship” with the governor earlier this year, and that he had helped get her a job with the city Department of Education just last month.  That sounds inappropriate, but at least there was nothing reported about campaign funds.

I spoke too soon.  On Thursday, the Governor admitted that he used a campaign credit card to pay for a hotel room where he met another woman who he could not recall.  He also could not recall if he paid the campaign back.  He must not have, because today, he reimbursed his campaign for hotel stays in December of 2002 and September of 2003.

I wish I could wrap this up, but the story will not die.  Today, the New York Post reported that “Gov. Paterson’s campaign-finance reports show he paid $1,000 to a woman who says she barely knows him, didn’t work for him and never received any money.”  Nevertheless, “Luisa Vizcarrondo, 49, was listed as ’staff’ on Paterson’s campaign for re-election when he was in the state Senate, and a payment of $1,000 was made to her on June 25, 2002, according the records.”

Even worse, the New York Sun reported today that “Paterson officials [are seeking] to provide details about more than $11,000 in payments that his campaign committee made between 2002 and 2007 to a 45-year-old woman, April Robbins-Bobyn, whose connection to Mr. Paterson is not clear.”  What is clear is that she received more than a dozen payments over a five year period totaling over $11,000.

The underlying problem here is that politicians are prohibited from taking campaign contributions for personal use.  And most everyone would agree that covering expenses for a politician’s girlfriend is a most personal use of campaign funds.

I am not happy about this story.  It is not good for the state of New York that its second governor in as many weeks could be indicted for misusing campaign funds.  We will have to wait and see if the governor can provide satisfactory explanations for these irregularities.  And I hope no new stories break in the coming days.

Gay Bashing Incident — Did It Really Happen? It Looks Like Political Correctness Wins Out Over Facts

Channel 13’s Rachael Barnhart had a fantastic piece Wednesday on the “Gay Bashing” incident from last summer.  You remember that, there were protests, press conferences and outrage in the gay community.  Too bad Maggie Brooks wasn’t appealing the judicial decision to re-define marriage last summer – then the liberal professional activist community could have been blamed her for promoting an intolerant attitude and this would have been her fault.

According to Channel 13:

13WHAM News has obtained an internal police department document into last year’s alleged anti-gay hate crime on South Goodman Street. It says there was no hate crime, and raises questions as to whether department leaders misled the public.

The RPD conducted two investigations into what happened on June 1, 2007. One was an internal affairs investigation into complaints of officer misconduct. The other was a criminal investigation that went to the grand jury.

13WHAM News obtained the incident report, which details the criminal investigation. The city did not want us to release this document, saying it was sealed by a judge in the grand jury proceeding.

(snip)

The report says one of the alleged victims and their friend were actually the aggressors in two separate fist fights that started when someone yelled an anti-gay slur from a parked taxi cab.

Investigators say one alleged victim told them he “did not believe the other group knew that anyone in his group was gay.”

Investigators say another alleged victim told them she “never heard any gay comments before, during, or after the fight.”

A friend of the alleged victims told police he “was pretty much in shock that the fight was turned into a hate crime.”

Investigators identified four people who fought with the alleged victims, but at no point did they consider those four people suspects.

Yet two weeks after the incident, Chief Moore announced the department was looking for four suspects, two men and two women.

Wow! This is a blockbuster and only one media outlet has done a story.  Take a look at what the Mayor’s chief flak, Gary Walker had to say:

City spokesman Gary Walker said there would be criminal and internal investigations into who leaked the document to 13WHAM News.

“The document is misleading,” Walker said. “It’s not the full story.”

What?  After the Public Defender selection issue, how can the City shut out “the community.”  We have a right to know what is going on.  The process works best when it is exposed to the light of public scrutiny.  The Mayor allows political correctness to effect criminal investigations.  All of this on “Sunshine Week” and the Democrat and Chronicle doesn’t even mention it.  They don’t have a problem using leaked information — they do it all the time.

Where is the outrage? Where are the protests? Let the police officers speak!  Let our people in ! We shall over come!  Sorry, I got caught up in the moment.

Seriously, this is big.  It shows how the liberal media, primarily the D&C, really fails to do its job.  It also points out the need for outlets like Monroerising.com.  The public has a right to know what’s going on.  It is starting to look like you need to be a professional protester to get the media’s attention.  We are at a disadvantage here. The conservative community doesn’t have a professional protest network (most of them have jobs and families to take care of).

Mayor Duffy’s breach of the public trust is bigger than almost any local issue in the last year and yet most people in Rochester will never know the facts of this case.  Think about the implications of what has happened.  Members of a protected class, in this case gays, uses their protected class status to incite the community in a case where it appears they were the ones acting inappropriately.

Maybe it’s me, but doesn’t that sound a lot like what happened at that first meeting of the Public Safety Committee when Assemblyman David Gantt refused the lawful orders of a police officers and his buddies actually pushed that poor woman around?

This is really getting out of hand.

Auberger For Congress?

Our friends over at Mustardstreet had an interesting post in light of Congressman Tom Reynolds announcement that he will not seek re-election this year.  Conventional wisdom seems to indicate that Senator George Maziarz will be the Republican pick to run for the seat.  But hold on — not so fast. What about Greece Supervisor John Auberger?

If he is interested, Auberger would be an excellent choice.  As Mustardstreet points out:

A far better pick for the GOP would be Greece Supervisor John Auberger.   While his constituency holds down the far eastern corner of the congressional district, Auberger is one of the very best and brightest in the local political world, with the political skills and sophistication to run a winning campaign and to make the most of the office for his constituents.   We can see him rising in the Congressional Republican leadership once he got there

Auberger is widely admired within his own party for ability, smarts and hard work.   He is admired, in particular, by those other senior Republicans who themselves are considered among the best and brightest in their party.

Auberger is the head of the best local Republican organization and there is little doubt that he could mobilize an army of volunteers to work on his campaign.  Maziarz could be tagged with the dysfunction of Albany, while Auberger could highlight his record and tap into a number of cultural conservatives who would be very happy about his decision to stand up to the ACLU on their attack against Jesus.

Time will tell. We’ll be watching.

Congressman Tom Reynolds Announces His Retirement

This afternoon, U.S. Congressman Tom Reynolds announced his retirement today to the residents of the Monroe County portion of his district.  He shared that one of the reasons for making the decision was his wish to spend more time with his family, namely his two grandchildren whom he says he rarely has the opportunity to see due to his position.

Hopefully, you can still watch this video from 13WHAM for coverage on the Reynolds press conference here in Monroe County.

Earlier in the day, Reynolds made the announcement at a fire hall in the Buffalo area.

No one can deny that serving in elected office does indeed place a strain on a person’s family life, especially at the national level.  I don’t know many people that could handle this, or that would even want to.  The time spent away from your loved ones while you’re away.  Even when you’re back home, you’re still traveling across a large district meeting with groups of people and attending community events.  It’s easy to criticize these people and treat them like they’re not regular people, but they had everyday lives before they got into public service.  Walk a mile in their shoes.

I personally think Reynolds was going to have another tough election this year.  Last time he ran, the Democrat organization sunk to one of their lows in trying to smear mud on him in the form of the inappropriate actions of another congressman.  If the Democrats forced Reynolds to be “his brother’s keeper” back then, then the Democrats had better be prepared to make the same apologies for their top dog, the disgraced former Democratic Governor of NY Eliot Spitzer.  I seem to recall that it was Republicans who shouted the loudest for the resignations of both individuals.

To Reynold’s credit, he made the trip to Monroe County to let his constituents here, know of his intentions to retire.  Many others would very well have made their announcement close to home and called it a day, leaving the media to spread it across the district.  This speaks volumes to Reynold’s character.  He spent more time in EVERY portion of his district than Louise Slaughter ever did.  People in Greece, for example, will tell you that they saw Reynolds in town more during his first year representing them than they did, or have, Louise is all her many years.  Does anyone even know that she still represents a portion of north Greece?  Of course not.

And Reynolds delivered big time to the communities in western Monroe.  Funding we here at Monroerising.com doubt we’ll ever see here again if one of the Buffalo Democrats win this seat.  At least we know that state Senator George Maziarz (mentioned as a possible candidate for the seat) would care about us here.  He currently represents western Monroe towns and portions of the City of Rochester as part of his Senate district.  IMO, we’ll never see that with one of the Buffalo Dems.

Bottom line, Congressman Reynolds is a stand up guy who despite the nasty and malicious attacks made against him by the Democrat machine, truly cared about his constituents and his district.  Even in his retirement, the Dems still feel the need to smear him and his name for their own political gain.

Tom, if you happen to read this, we at Monroerising.com thank you for your many years of elected service to your constituents, we thank you for your hard work and personal sacrifice, and we wish you and your family the very best as you go back to having a normal, personal, family life.  Godspeed.

BREAKING –REYNOLDS RETIRING!?

Channel 13 is reporting Congressman Tom Reynolds is expected to announce he is retiring.

Formal announcement this afternoon.

It appears that Congressman Tom Reynolds is retiring.  This morning, multiple sources are reporting that Reynolds will make it official this afternoon.

I reached Reynolds’ press secretary LD Platt just before 6 am this morning (a little early to be up and available by blackberry, doncha think?) and he chose not to deny the reports.  He said the only thing he could officially say was that Reynolds would hold a formal press conference in Greece at 2 this afternoon.

Why Obama’s Pastor Matters

On September 16, 2001, I was driving through Chicago with my wife. We were on our way back from visiting family in Wisconsin for a week. Obviously, this vacation was more than marred by the events of 9-11. As we drove through a toll booth outside of the city, I was struck by what I saw on the electronic signs. They said simply, “God Bless America.” There was very little traffic that day, in part because of the fact that it was late on a Sunday morning, but much more because of the horrors that had occurred just days before. A Major League Baseball game I was supposed to attend the day before had been canceled. The NFL games scheduled for that week had also been canceled. It was as if the whole world had stopped. The country was shocked, and it was united. Bitter congressional rivals stood outside the Capitol Building, singing “God Bless America.” Little did I know at the time, that just a few short miles from where I sat marveling at how the country seemed to be of one mind, Rev. Jeremiah Wright was delivering this message to his congregation at Trinity United Church of Christ:

We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye. We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.

Of course we all know that Wright has become significant now because he has been Barack Obama’s pastor for 20 years, marrying Obama and his wife Michelle and baptizing their children. Wright was also an adviser to Obama until this story broke. Now Obama has distanced himself from Wright and denounced these statements and others that have been well documented.

From the passage above, you can see that Wright found it prudent to blame America for 9-11, even as the towers smoldered and rescue workers searched for survivors among the thousands of casualties. What you don’t get from that passage is the bitter anger and hatred in this man’s voice. I think it’s Wright’s tone that will end up hurting Obama even more than his actual words. This man has clearly been spewing hatred for America and for whites for decades, and his tone and words will be echoing in the ears of many white voters in this Democratic primary and the general election if Obama is the nominee.

It seemed like Obama was well on his way to overcoming the biggest obstacle that any minority presidential candidate faces: convincing the majority of Americans that he speaks for them and not just the grievances of his minority constituents. That’s why Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton could never be serious presidential candidates. Obama’s tone has been different. He’s been open and conciliatory and seemingly genuinely so. Now his opponents (and more importantly their surrogates) have the opportunity to paint him with the hateful brush of his former pastor’s words.

In his recent speech on the matter, I think Obama really pegged Wright’s rhetoric perfectly:

The profound mistake of Reverend Wright’s sermons is not that he spoke about racism in our society. It’s that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress has been made; as if this country – a country that has made it possible for one of his own members to run for the highest office in the land and build a coalition of white and black; Latino and Asian, rich and poor, young and old — is still irrevocably bound to a tragic past.

Those are powerful words, but will they drown out the hate speech of Jeremiah Wright in the minds of voters? I doubt it.

14621 Director — My Husband Lets Me Work There, But There Is No Way He Would Ever Live There!

The Democrat and Chronicle had an interesting story on Joan Roby-Davison, the Executive Director of the 14621 Community Association.  According to the D&C:

Even before Roby-Davison, 53, joined Group 14621, she had been doing community work at other neighborhood agencies. And though she is originally from Ontario County and now lives in Penfield, she has always loved Rochester and quickly grew to care about the people who live in the city neighborhoods.

(snip)

Roby-Davison lived in the city for several years but remarried in 1999 and moved with her husband to Penfield.

What!? She lives in Penfield.  There wasn’t one person in that entire zip code that could lead that organization?

Let’s hope the honchos over there make sure their next director actually lives there.

What If John McCain’s Pastor Said This?

I just saw the comment Bad Prudence sent regarding Rocky Rotundee’s post on Louise Slaughter politicizing that veteran’s event in Brighton.

Amazing. It always seems to come back to the myopic viewpoint that is frequently espoused on this most conservative blog — America is wonderful, Republicans are wonderful, the Bush Administration is wonderful, John McCain is wonderful …….

Those ungrateful _________________ don’t know what they have nor how much the above have sacrificed for them (fill in the blank with your favorite group — blacks, gays, women, Democrats, liberals etc.).

It would be funny if it were not quite so pathetic and misinformed.

Bad Prudence
p.s. — perhaps you should listen carefully to what Obama said in his speech today — he was referring to YOU!

I’m pretty sure Bad Prudence is a Democrat.  Our goal here at Monroerising.com is to show liberals at their hypocritical best.  Quite frankly, I am tired of seeing conservatives painted as bad people.  The point is the liberal media has a bias that is out of hand.

I would also challenge her to show anything on this website that is pro- George Bush, anti-gay, anti-black, or anti-woman.  Just because we think Louise Slaughter is a self serving hypocrite and David Gantt is using the public defender selection issue as a smoke screen for his own lack of accomplishment, doesn’t mean we are anti-woman or anti-black.  That is exactly the problem with liberals — criticise one of their own and you are a bad person.

Since Prudence brought up the junior Senator from Illinois, take a look at what his pastor had to say about Hillary, Bill, white people, etc.  If John McCain’s pastor said this he would be lambasted in the press.  The media has given Barack Obama a free pass on this and that’s just wrong!
