Another Reason For “Rich” Dollinger to Not Run For Senate
Liz Benjamin had an interesting post on the new feud between state Senate Democrats and the Working Families Party. This should be of concern to Rich Dollinger. According to Benjamin:
To start with, they risk being abandoned by a key ally, the Working Families Party. The outfit’s top players are furious with the Senate Dems’ refusal to back up Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver on the so-called millionaires tax.
In a heated conference call last Friday, officials of the labor-backed party deemed Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith a “disappointment” and asked whether continuing to help him would be a waste of time. The party has played a big role in bringing the Democrats to within spitting distance of wresting the Senate chamber from Republican hands.
(snip)
Adding to the Senate Democrats’ problems is Gov. Paterson’s lack of fund-raising prowess. In the last six months of last year, Paterson’s campaign committee spent more than twice as much he raised and now has just $114,854 on hand.

“Every minute they waste amplifies the problem,” said a veteran Democratic fund-raiser. “In these early days, he should be reaching out and talking to people, not even necessarily asking for money.”
The Senate Democrats have approximately $930,000 in their campaign committees and $13,000 worth of debt. The Senate Republicans have $4.1 million and no debt.
The Democrats already acknowledge they will have to scale back their expectations for this fall. They plan to ask prospective candidates to raise more money on their own.
Imagine being in Dollinger’s position, having to pony up more of the family fortune so you can try for a job were you will be forced to vote against your own interest (voting for the millionaire tax).
I had no idea that being rich could be such a problem.
