Democrat Jon Powers — Same-sex Marriage is An Issue For the States to Deal With!?

I saw an article in yesterday’s D&C about NOW having a problem with Democratic Congressional candidate Jon Powers because he received an award from the Ancient Order of Hibernians — a group with beliefs tied to the Catholic Church (Gasp!).  I couldn’t find the link on the D&C website — so this is from the hard copy I pulled from my recycling bin.

Evidently, the Hibernians state on their website that “no one who holds views that contradict the teachings of the Catholic faith can be publicly honored by the group.”  That would mean he believes that homosexual marriage is wrong (imagine that — a marriage needing one man and one woman — what a neanderthal) and he is pro-life.  But wait, his campaign manager said he is pro-choice and that “same-sex marriage is an issue for states to deal with.”

What!? Well Joe Meleca-Voigt, the Democratic leader of Greece Democrats and one of the local poster gals for gay marriage, must be all over Powers on this one, right? Well, no not really. Meleca-Voigt had this to say after predicting he would win their support:

He has shown a genuine interest in Monroe County … It seems to me Jon has a very good chance (to win the endorsement of her committee)

This is an interesting take.  Evidently, all it takes to win Democratic support is “a genuine interest in Monroe County .”  But what about the values Democrats hold so sacred.

Sources tell us that Jo was a big supporter of Jack Davis in his previous runs for congress — making her support of Powers even more unusual.

What about others?

Power’s honor by the Hibernians is a “serious problem” for the candidate, said Linda Stephens, political action committee chairwoman for Rochester NOW, a chapter of the National Organization of Women.

Wait a minute! Linda Stephens — that’s the “Greece citizen” who is suing Greece because they refuse to impose guidelines on local clergy and actually allows them to mention Jesus at a public meeting.  Now she is making someone’s religious beliefs an issue in a political campaign.

In addition to being a part of the NOW Crowd, she is an avowed aethist, a member of the Greece Democratic Committee and she gave money to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

This is amazing!  I can’t wait to see what happens when Jo Meleca-Voigt’s group gets together.  Stay tuned — we will keep you posted.

  1. Nice article, Cincinnatus. I was going to comment on this myself, but you beat me to the punch. You can find the story here:

The democrats never cease to amaze me. I see a candidate like Powers and I get nervous. He’s an Iraq war vet, he’s young, he’s a teacher, and he’s charismatic. He’s the sort of guy that can take a republican district by storm.

But sure enough, because he might be a person of faith, he’s fair game for the balkanized identity groups in the democratic party. Amazing.

  2. What hypocrites!

  3. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!

    I love it! If a moderate/conservative doesn’t support a liberal/progressive issue, then they’re the spawn of Satan.

    Buuuuut, if a liberal doesn’t support a liberal/progressive issue, well… er… um, then I guess that…. well….um… hey, look over there!

Well that there is just a-ok hunky dory with them, as long as you have a “genuine interest in Monroe County.” What the hell does THAT mean?

Soooooo, it’s fine then to oppose gay marriage… if you’re a liberal.

Does that make it ok for anyone else to oppose gay marriage then? Just asking a question to my liberal friends.

This Jo Maleca giving Jon Powers a free pass on gay marriage is a crock! She just tossed her credibility right out the window! The Liberal Law says that you ABSOLUTELY MUST support gay marriage AND partial birth abortion in order to be given their blessing.

He’s not even elected and Jon Powers is already dancing around the issues!

    Roll out Jack Davis!

  4. So Powers either opposes gay/lesbian marriage and should be denounced by Jo Meleca, the Greece Democrat leader who has said gay marriage is the most important issue to her.

Or, Jon Powers supports gay/lesbian marriage but will not give his stance because he thinks it will hurt him in the campaign, and should be denounced by Jo Meleca because he won’t openly give his position.

He’s also trying to dodge issues that voters want to know his position on.

Either way, Jon Powers is not supporting the issues that are most important to his political campaign team - the Liberal/Progressive movement that is trying to take over this state.
