I Know You Wanted Change — But What Do You Think About the Job Jason Koon Is Doing As Mayor?
Sometimes its good to have a person with experience. They know what they can and can’t do, what they should and shouldn’t do. Take Jason “Baby Doc” Koon — a guy with no experience. When he took office, a month earlier than we all thought, his first step is to fire a bunch of people he had no authority to fire. You see, on TV when the Mayor takes office he fires everyone and hires a whole new staff.
When you’re the Mayor of a conterminous town-village you can’t buy a roll of toilet paper without board approval. It took Baby Doc awhile to figure this out and after a few meeting with a couple of hundred angry residents, Koon finally learned the lesson.
At Tuesday nights County Legislature meeting, Mike Barker and Anthony Danielle had a referral in to direct Maggie Brook’s staff to look for alternative locations for the senior nutrition program that Mayor Koon cut on one week’s notice.
We found this Democrat and Chronicle article on the subject. According to the D&C:
Mayor Jason Koon ended the East Rochester meals program, which had provided lunches at the Quinzi Lodge on Wilson Avenue, last Friday.

The program had been budgeted through May, but Koon worked out a deal to start transporting participants to the Webster Seniors Center for meals this week.

Flanigan wishes the board had been given until the end of May to explore alternative funding sources that could have kept the program in East Rochester or moved it to a closer suburb. He said about 150 seniors took advantage of the program each year.
“Our senior neighbors deserve nothing less than a nutrition program administered as close to their homes as possible,” he said.
Imagine that, low income senior citizens not having to travel a half an hour each way just so they could afford to eat lunch. That seems like an idea everyone –especially Democrats could get behind, right?
Well hold on! Carrie Andrews starting asking questions on the referral. Sources tell me Mike Barker, one of the most able Republican legislators, did a good job – with rookie legislator Anthony Danielle, in showing the outrageousness of the Democrats being outraged by the referral.
Sources also claim that Barker’s seat prevented him from having the problem that most men face when debating Ms. Andrews, the temptation to sneak a peak down her blouse.
Ted O’Bein, Paul Haney and others had questions.
Kelly Reed, the County Social Service Director responded to a Democratic question by stating Mayor Koon called the Webster Supervisor on his own and asked him if he wanted to feed ER’s seniors in exchange for ER’s nutrition grant. The only problem with that, explained Ms. Reed was that Mayor Koon had no authority to offer Supervisor Nesbitt any money because it was county money.
After about 20 minutes of debate, every single Democrat voted against the referral with the exception of Carmen Gumina.
So much for change. So much for the Democrats caring about the little people. It looks like party politics won out for the Democrats last Tuesday.
