Maybe David Koon Doesn’t Mind Being Irrelevant
With the battle to run against Joe Robach on, we at Monroerising.com have turned our attention to the other much anticipated Senate race, Assemblyman David Koon vs. Senator Jim Alesi. As investigative reporter Prudence noted last month, Koon only has about $15,000 in his campaign account and hasn’t been in the media in months (other than defending his goofy son Jason — the guy who was elected Mayor without understanding it takes a majority vote to do anything in local government) — hardly the action of a serious candidate for higher office.
All of this has me thinking. Maybe David Koon, who was elected to the Assembly almost 12 years ago, likes it there. Maybe the fact that after all of this time he is still the junior member of our Assembly majority delegation doesn’t bother him. Everyone knows that seniority is the key to stature in the Assembly — how else would you explain David Gantt’s prominence?
If I was David Koon — I would want to leave the Assembly as quickly as I could. Gantt, Joe Morelle and Susan John are all ahead of him in seniority. Maybe Koon, who promised to “make a difference” when he was elected, doesn’t care anymore.
Maybe the Assembly job offers financial security to Koon and his family and after beating his chest last year he has come to his senses. Who knows, in another 10 years he might accumulate some seniority and be able to accomplish something?
One last point: where is the D&C when it comes to political reporting? That’s one of the reasons we created this site. The D&C does a terrible job on reporting politics, which is probably a good thing for Republicans given their extreme liberal bias.
We would like to hear your thoughts on Koon and/or the D&C.

My prediction: Koon won’t run. No money. No stones.
No way he’ll risk an easy lifetime gig in the Assembly, with the “perks” he enjoys, to take on a hard-to-beat incumbent like Alesi.
He loses the Assembly seat and he’s probably unemployable except as a Democratic Party charity case. Given his level of popularity among the other Assembly Democrats, even that’s far from certain.
Also — Papa Doc Koon needs to let Baby Doc Koon accumulate more mileage, and in a favorable light for a change, as Mayor of East Rochester, in order for junior to take Papa’s Assembly if Papa Doc goes to the Senate. 2008 is too soon for that, and so far all Baby Doc’s associated with is public embarrassment.
Gantt, Morelle, John and Koon. What have you done for me lately?
All rubber stamps for Shelly Silver who will occasionally throw them a bone (thanks for Paetec ‘in the hood’ Park which is working out great!).
Tax us more and waste the money - please, please, please! We don’t really want our money and prefer that you forcibly take it from us using taxes and fees and surcharges. Thank you to the unions and welfare recipients around this state (which receive the money) for keeping you in office. Because of their laziness and entitlement mentality, there is no end in site for the rest of NY.
Gantt, Morelle, John, and Koon. Thieves.
Meanwhile, friends an family leave the State, and more welfare candidates move in. I love NY!
What really has Koon done?????
It’s no surprise that the D&C (Koon’s media outlet) never exposed his “taxpayer “paid for mailing that landed in his district three days before the election of his son in East Rochester.
Koon is all about politics.
Don’t be fooled!!!!!!
Koon swept into office against the odds. His family had been wronged and the voters wanted to give him the opportunity, and expected him, to make a difference. I for one expected a better push for the death penalty, tougher crime prevention laws, stiffer sentences and more money for police. Koon may be able to keep his Assembly seat, but he can’t beat Alesi until he stands for something and this time with conviction. His lack of conviction is the reason that he is still and will continue to be the junior member of our Assembly delegation. But as we know if Koon has not found conviction yet, he never will.
The buzz is that Koon is out. It’s no secret that the intention was for his son to build name identification by running for mayor in East Rochester. Then when David was going to announce he was running against Alesi, the son was going to announce his run for his dad’s Assembly seat.
However, the son never expected to win, which explains why he made such a big mess of things in E.R. Everyone there knows that Democrat attorney is really running the place. No offense to the son, but he is in way over his head. We’ve heard he’s had trouble holding down other jobs too. I don’t know of any other elected official who regularly refuses to do media interviews and communicates through an attorney instead of directly to the public.
So, it looks like the books are closed on Koon running against Alesi. He’s having WAY too much fun anyway being an underwhelming, sleepy little Assemblyman who doesn’t do a whole heckova lot in Albany anyway for his almost $100,000 salary.
Why would anyone want to give up that just to have to work harder for the same pay?
I’m pretty hard on Koon. I have several D&C forum messages in which I basically call his committee membership into question. The guy has been around for 12 years which means he has been re-elected 5 times. Take a look at the guy’s Assembly profile and his legislation. It makes no sense. The guy should be spearheading efforts to help the Upstate NY region but he’s still affected largely by his daughter’s fate and that’s what his legislation is largely based upon.
That’s great that you want to keep people safe, but when they don’t have a job, they are going to resort to guns and robbery to make ends meet anyways. Isn’t one thing supposed to be better than the other? Where are his economic legislation pieces? He has to wait until Silver writes them so that he can jot down his name as a co-sponsor. What exactly is a co-sponsor anyways?

Many people have talked about the fun he has when he’s in Albany.
We’d rather not know stampede, if THAT’s what you mean. Thanks.
