What Happened to Sandy Frankel’s Press Conference Announcing Her Run Against Joe Robach?
Tuesday’s Democrat and Chronicle said that Sandy Frankel had a press conference planned for Wednesday to formally announce that she was going to run for Senate.
She plans to make a formal announcement on Wednesday that she will run for the 56th District seat now held by Republican Joseph Robach of Greece.
I’ve read the morning paper, watched RNews and listened to WHAM and WXXI and not one word about the press conference. This would lead me to believe that it didn’t happen.
I can think of several reasons why the press conference didn’t happen.
1) Mr. Peabody’s expose (followed by an excellent piece by Occam) on Frankel’s improper use of the Town of Brighton Website linking to her campaign website scared her off.
2) Somebody is trying to talk her out of challenging Richard Dollinger — Monroerising.com believes either Frankel or Willa Powell would have more support among rank and file Democrats.
3) Frankel, who is notoriously late to everything, arrived at her own press conference 45 minutes after it was supposed to start and all of the media left before she got there.
Personally, I think number 2 is the correct answer, although number 3 certainly is believable. The scheme to run Dollinger is probably being pushed by the Senate Democrats (do you know anyone in Rochester who would be excited by a return of Senator no-show?). His pattern of putting himself first has been well documented and we don’t need to rehash it — we can just put a link to this past post!
Don’t be surprised if Sandy Frankel announces she made a mistake and meant to say she she wanted to run for County Clerk, not Senate. Or maybe they think that just because she’s 66 years old she can be bought off with some cushy job that could help boost her final average salary in the retirement system.
We stand by our original premise that there is no way Dollinger wins a “fair fight” for the Democratic nomination. It will take political muscle to get Dollinger the Democratic nomination. The big question is whether Sandy Frankel buckles or stands up for what will probably be her last shot at glory.

Dear Cincinnatus,
I appreciate your interest in the campaign for New York State Senate, 56th District, but let’s set the record straight.
1. The Town of Brighton’s newly designed Web site did have a link to http://www.sandrafrankel.org, but the fact of the matter is that there never was nor is such a Web site. We have already removed that line and corrected any possible perception of a problem.
I do have a campaign Web site, but the Town of Brighton’s Web site does not provide a link. However, if your readers are interested in visiting my Web site, I welcome them: http://www.sandrafrankel.com.
2. I postponed my press conference for personal reasons. I’m sure that you and your readers understand that personal is just that, personal. We sent out a press release in advance of Wednesday’s press conference to alert the media and phoned as many people as we could to advise them of the change.
3. I am 66 years young and proud of it. One benefit of my age is that I have gained a great deal of experience that will be very useful in Albany, since I have on-the-ground understanding of the challenges facing our community, and a record of accomplishment in solving problems and making progress to improve conditions and services for the people I have served.
I have worked in the trenches as Superivsor for 16 years, as a school board member for 10 years, and as a Speech Language Pathologist and community activist for more than 20 years in the public and private sectors, in health care and educational settings and in private practice. I know what our community needs and how to get the job done.
It may be of interest to you to know that my mother retired from her position at the Light House for the Blind in Miami, FL at the age of 82 and she’s still going strong! Today, 60 is the new 40.
I also encourage those who focus on age, per se, to rethink their perspective in light of our newly enlightened laws on age discrimination.
Thanks for thinking of me. I hope this is helpful.
Sandy Frankel
Ms. Frankel:
Thank you for continuing to visit Monroerising.com. We appreciate your participation and want to offer you the opportunity to clear up another question regarding the campaign/town government website issue. We noticed something curious.
On which website would Brighton citizens expect to read the following:
[Ms. Frankel was elected Supervisor in 1991. Despite a larger Republican than Democratic voter registration, she became the first Democrat and first woman to hold the office of Elected Executive/CEO in the Town’s 177-year history. Under Ms. Frankel’s leadership, the council changed from a Republican majority to an all-Democratic Town Board that has continued to win and govern successfully. In 1998, Democratic voter registration in Brighton surpassed Republican registration for the first time.]
Or this:
[In 1998, Sandra Frankel won the Primary Election to become the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of New York. She won all 62 counties in New York State and 82 percent of the Democratic votes cast in Monroe County.]
If their initial response was the camapign website… well, they’d be wrong. This political information was placed on the Brighton Town website. What is the governmental benefit to having this there?
Also, I think you misunderstood Cinci’s comment regarding your age. I believe his point was that the Democratic Party bosses would possibly try to get you to back out of the race by offering you a higher paying government job, assuming that you’d consider taking it to pad your retirement benefit.
We sympathize about Dollinger keeping it from you that he wasn’t going to finish out his term. He’s had some history pulling stuff that on the people that voted for him, especially when it seems to serve his political ambitions. I actually believe that you’ll soundly beat him in the primary even though a number of people on your side of the aisle don’t seem to think so. We think he really doesn’t want to be a senator anyway.
Finally, Monroerising.com sincerely hopes that the postponement of your campaign announcement was not due to a serious, unfortunate personal matter. If there was indeed a situation with you, or within your family, or something along those lines, we offer our prayers and well wishes.
P.S. - That is wonderful to hear about your mother. Still rockin’ and rollin’ at 82! God bless her!
